Job Overview

The IT Operations Administrator is responsible for the resilience, maintenance, monitoring and securing of the current computing environment to ensure agreed SLA’s for systems up time are met or exceeded.  The IT Operations Administrator uses their knowledge and expertise to keep IT staff updated on the latest tools, technologies and processes in order to maintain currency and security of the company’s on premise and cloud computing environments. 

Key Responsibilities

 1.     IT Operations and Server Administration  
  • Assists with developing server strategies, plans, and designs. 
  • Monitors current server diagnostics, configurations, capacity and performance; creating technical reports, recommendations, and solutions to meet short-term and long-term requirements. 
  • Routine evaluation of resource capabilities and anticipating future requirements, making recommendations as appropriate.
  • Participates in the development, implementation and enforcement of policies, procedures, standards and guidelines to ensure a secure IT infrastructure. Analyses and participates in the development of security standards and implementation of security controls for servers.
  • Provides 2nd and 3rd line (expert) support for server issues.      
  • Provide timely response to incidents, following the Incident Management Procedures as appropriate.
  • Engages with the evaluation, development and testing of Business Continuity Plans.
  • Troubleshooting, diagnosing and solving server issues as necessary. 
  • Forms part of the IT call-out team to ensure 24x7 cover for critical systems. 
  • Installs, configures and maintains servers as necessary to support these objectives. 
  • Ensures that systems are kept in a secure and maintainable state by applying the latest approved patches and upgrades after appropriate testing. 
  • Ensures effective preventive system maintenance procedures are in place and carried out.
  • Maintains on-premise data centre facilities, ensures effective maintenance & management of DC assets; system hardware, software, physical equipment and any offline equipment. 
  • Manages day to day IT Operations, aiming for maximum effectiveness in routine daily operations.  Proposing the introduction of automation as necessary. 
  • Programs scripts to support automation of IT Operations. 
  • Manages the backup systems to ensure backups are kept as required by information security policies. 
  • Point of contact for cloud and infrastructure contracts. 
  • Monitors performance of cloud and infrastructure contracts against agreed SLAs. 
2.     Data/Voice Network Administration  The IT Operations Administrator supports a resilient and cost-effective network to support normal business operations: 
  • Provides 2nd line support for data and voice network issues. 
  • Troubleshooting, diagnosing and solving network issues as necessary. 
  • Installs, configures and maintains network assets as necessary to support these objectives.
  • Supports the implementation of network policies and standards. 
3.     General Responsibilities  
  • Maintains IT asset inventories as appropriate to ensure proper asset management. 
  • Updating incidents, service requests and changes with timely and complete information, escalating internally or to external support partners as required. 
  • Evaluates customer requests or projects; analysing requirements and pertinent technical information; developing and implementing quality, cost-effective solutions. 
  • Prepares business cases, considering options and making clear and cost-effective recommendations. 
  • Following Management of Change processes, coordinates system changes with appropriate stakeholders to ensure uninterrupted service to the business. 
  • Assists with evaluation and testing of hardware, software and services. 
  • Raises and receipts purchase orders as necessary to support the work of the IT Section. 
  • Other responsibilities as may be defined in Information Security Policies and Procedures, as authorised by the Information Security Working Group. 
  • Keeps professional skills updated and consistent with current information-systems networking technology and server technology.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • A degree level qualification in a Computing-Related Discipline or 5 years’ experience in computing.
  • Self-starter who takes ownership of service delivery issues.
  • Takes an analytical approach to problem solving
  • Demonstrates Commercial acumen and Business focus
  • Displays good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with all end users at all levels within the business
  • Good knowledge of IT service best practice (ITIL)
  • A broad knowledge of technology standards in server computing and related technology.
  • Certifications in computing technologies desirable
  • A keen interest in cloud computing technologies (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS)
