Role Purpose: To ensure hygiene in dining spaces, assist in meal preparation and service, and maintain clean accommodation, contributing to crew well-being and operational efficiency at sea.

Key Responsibilities

Assist with food preparation, cooking, serving, and maintaining cleanliness in the galley area, provision stores, and reefer rooms. Perform housekeeping tasks, including cleaning Officers’ cabins and making beds as assigned. Manage laundry operations, including washing and drying of crew linens. Assist the Chief Cook with inventory and stowage of provisions. Ensure waste management through proper disposal and separation of galley waste as per maritime regulations.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential Knowledge: The Messman must be familiar with company policies and procedures, food safety and hygiene standards, and the operation and maintenance of specialized kitchen equipment. Key knowledge areas include inventory control of supplies, food preparation, storage, and handling, as well as waste management practices and eco-friendly initiatives.

Essential Skills and Abilities: Effective communication and reporting skills are essential for the Messman, along with the ability to maintain high standards of cleanliness in living quarters, dining areas, and galley spaces while following proper sanitation procedures. Basic cooking skills and effective time management are also required, ensuring tasks are prioritized and completed on schedule. The ability to safely operate laundry room and galley equipment is important.

Experience: Demonstrates leadership behaviors and maintains cleanliness in the galley, pantry, provision storage areas, and living quarters. Shows hospitality skills towards both the crew and the vessel’s guests, consistently adhering to sanitation protocols in a professional setting. Handles all aspects of laundry duties effectively and efficiently.
