Key Responsibilities
In this role you will:
- Lead the system safety program to ensure all hazards are systematically identified, analysed, and controlled to a level that is SFARP, in accordance with Defence policy and applicable regulatory frameworks.
- Develop and maintain the System Safety Case, including safety arguments, evidence sets, endorsements, including development of the Safety Case Reports.
- Oversee hazard identification, analysis, and risk evaluation activities in accordance with MIL STD 882E and Defence safety frameworks, including ownership of the Class Hazard Log.
- Define, review, and assure the adequacy of preventive and mitigative controls, and coordinate verification activities (test, inspection, analysis, trials) to confirm control implementation and effectiveness.
- Manage hazard analysis and risk evaluation activities under MIL‑STD‑882E, including ownership of the Class Hazard Log and its configuration control.
- Provide technical safety leadership across engineering disciplines, integrating safety requirements into design changes, maintenance, upgrades, and exercising delegated Technical Authority.
- Evaluate engineering changes, defects, and incidents for safety impact, support certification and regulatory compliance, and facilitate Safety/Engineering Boards with wide stakeholder engagement.
About you
To be successful in this role, you should:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, or related discipline).
- Demonstrated experience in Systems Safety Engineering, preferably within the Australian Defence or Maritime sectors.
- Strong knowledge of system safety standards (e.g., MIL-STD-882, IEC 61508) and safety management methodologies.
- Experience with the "in-service" or sustainment phase of asset management is highly desirable.
- Ability to facilitate safety workshops and communicate complex safety concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Security Clearance: Must hold or be eligible to obtain an Australian Defence Security Clearance (NV1 minimum).
