Job Overview

As a Senior Technical Engineer, you will be hands‑on responsible for ensuring heavy plant, shredders, screeners, magnets, and fixed‑line recycling equipment operate safely, reliably, and efficiently. The role focuses on planned preventive maintenance, reactive breakdown support, diagnostics, repairs, and contributing to continuous improvement across a busy operational site. The position forms a key part of the site’s engineering capability, with responsibility for supporting out‑of‑hours call‑outs.

This is a national role which will cover all of Seras' operational sites. Therefore, a full UK driving licence is a requirement of the role; a company van will be provided for business use only. 

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Breakdown Response
  • Service, maintain, and repair heavy plant, shredders, screeners, magnets, and fixed‑line recycling equipment.
  • Diagnose and rectify mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic faults.
  • Respond promptly to breakdowns, ensuring safety and minimising plant downtime.
  • Provide hands‑on support during urgent or emergency repairs.

Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM)

  • Carry out PPM tasks in line with site schedules and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Inspect machinery, conduct lubrication, make adjustments, and replace components as required.
  • Identify early signs of potential failure and take proactive steps to prevent equipment downtime.

Out‑of‑Hours Support

  • Participate in an out‑of‑hours call‑out rota to support urgent engineering issues.
  • Attend site during emergency breakdowns, providing effective, hands‑on technical support.

Health & Safety

  • Follow all site safety standards, safe systems of work, and lock‑off/tag‑out procedures.
  • Ensure all engineering tasks meet legal and company health & safety requirements.
  • Promote a strong safety‑first culture throughout the site and wider engineering team.

Team & Site Support

  • Work collaboratively with operations teams to maximise plant availability and performance.
  • Support installation, modification, commissioning, and improvement projects for plant and fixed‑line equipment.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers and fitters when required.
  • Liaise effectively with external contractors, suppliers, and specialists.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential

  • Proven hands‑on experience working with heavy plant, shredders, screeners, magnets, or fixed‑line recycling equipment.
  • Strong mechanical engineering background with working knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Confident fault‑finding skills and experience resolving breakdowns under pressure.
  • Flexibility to support out‑of‑hours call‑outs when required.

Desirable

  • Engineering qualification such as NVQ Level 3, HNC, or equivalent.
  • Welding and fabrication skills.
  • Experience working in high‑throughput recycling, waste management, or similar industrial environments.
