Job Overview

The Medical Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the day-to-day delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care by assisting providers and care teams in clinical and administrative functions. This position is responsible for ensuring efficient patient flow, accurate clinical documentation, and a positive patient experience while upholding the highest standards of professionalism, safety, and compassion. All responsibilities are carried out in accordance with Bay Community Health’s (BCH) policies and procedures, with a commitment to teamwork, continuous quality improvement, and improving health outcomes for the communities we serve.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Support & Patient Care
  • Perform nursing and clinical procedures under the supervision of a Physician or Physician Assistant.
  • Assist Physicians and Physician Assistants in exam rooms.
  • Escort patients to exam rooms, interview patients, obtain and document vital signs including height/weight, blood pressure, pulse, and temperature in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Provide patient instructions as directed by the provider.
  • Recognize and appropriately respond to urgent and emergent situations in accordance with established protocols.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and performance of clinical duties including, but not limited to nebulizer treatments, ear irrigations, hearing and vision testing, urine and drug screening, glucose testing, spirometry testing, and EKGs.
  • Ensure all reports, labs, and pertinent medical information are available and filed in the patient’s medical record prior to appointments.
  • Maintain exam rooms by stocking supplies, maintaining instruments, and preparing sterilization as required.
 
Care Coordination & Administrative Support
  • Triage and process messages from patients and front office staff to Physicians and Physician Assistants.
  • Answer phones, route calls appropriately, take messages, and document communications in the EHR.
  • Schedule patient appointments as needed, following provider scheduling guidelines.
  • Assist with prior authorizations for medications, durable medical equipment (DME), and imaging when necessary.
  • Maintain all required logs and checks including refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, and autoclave logs.
 
Quality, Compliance & Team-Based Care
  • Improve patient outcomes and deliver quality care within assigned practice areas.
  • Ensure clinical care meets or exceeds established goals for clinical outcomes, quality assurance standards, and patient satisfaction.
  • Participate in quality improvement strategies to identify opportunities to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Participate in daily huddles with the PCMH care team to identify high-risk patients and those requiring care management.
  • Remain current with clinical knowledge, practices, skills, and standards of care relevant to the assigned clinical area.
  • Demonstrate competency in practice and adherence to current standards of care.
 
Professionalism & Customer Service
  • Provide excellent, patient-centered customer service with a friendly, courteous, compassionate, and empathetic approach.
  • Effectively multitask while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Work collaboratively and positively with all staff to promote teamwork in a patient-centered, team-based model of care.
  • Contribute to team success by supporting organizational goals and fostering a positive work environment.
  • Always maintain a professional appearance.
  • Adhere to HIPAA guidelines, patient confidentiality requirements, and Bay Community Health’s Code of Conduct.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

In addition to the primary functions listed above the incumbent may be required to perform other functions as assigned. Employees are required to follow any other job-related instructions and to perform any other job-related duties as requested by their supervisor.
 
Supervision
Works from established objectives, plans and/or statements of work to complete assignments. Functions independently to meet objectives. Responsible for meeting deadlines while keeping management appraised of progress or problems.
 
Problem Solving and Decision Making
Exercises judgement and initiative to complete all tasks. As warranted, obtains assistance from other staff to resolve issues.
 
Communications and Interpersonal Skills
Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the internal organization as well as external clients and vendors.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant training program required or equivalent clinical experience.
  • Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, CCMA, or equivalent) preferred; certification may be required within a specified timeframe after hire, if not already obtained.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification required or must be obtained within a defined period
