The Field Technician Level 3 is a skilled and dependable team member capable of independently completing complex field operations involving wet taps, line stops, and valve insertions on a wider range of pipe types and sizes. This role demonstrates increasing technical proficiency, consistently applies safe work practices, and actively supports training and mentoring of junior technicians.
Key Responsibilities
• Independently perform wet taps up to and including 42” on various pipe types (e.g., PVC, DIP, CIP, HDPE, Concrete, Steel)
• Execute standard line stops and valve insertions without supervision
• Set up, operate, and dismantle advanced tapping and line-stopping equipment
• Identify and prepare appropriate tools and fittings for each job
• Troubleshoot field issues and assist with temporary pipeline repairs
• Maintain accurate job documentation and safety logs
• Support junior technicians with training and field preparation
• Assist with shop operations, equipment maintenance, and truck readiness
• Adhere to all safety and quality protocols

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Required Skills and Abilities
• Advanced familiarity with underground utility installation techniques
• Proficient in identifying components for tapping, valve inserting, and line-stop setups
• Strong troubleshooting ability and mechanical aptitude
• Effective communication and leadership potential
• Valid driver’s license (clean record); Class A CDL preferred
• Ability to work in confined spaces and extreme outdoor conditions
• Comfortable working independently on emergency/on-call shifts
• Working knowledge of OSHA & EPA regulations
• Proficiency with job site devices such as tablets, GPS, and digital reporting tools

• High school diploma or GED
• 3–5 years of relevant experience in utility construction or field operations
• OSHA 10 and forklift certification (or obtained within 90 days of hire)

• Ability to walk, climb, carry materials, and work in awkward positions
• Frequent standing, kneeling, and repetitive motion required
• Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs and climb 30-foot ladders
• Visual and auditory attention to detail in hazardous environments
• Exposure to varying weather conditions, equipment noise, and confined spaces
• Requires regional or national travel and extended periods away from home
