Job Overview

MacNabb Waste is seeking a motivated and reliable Yard Operative to support daily waste handling and recycling activities at our Downpatrick site. The successful candidate will be experienced in operating heavy machinery within a waste or industrial environment and will hold valid Telehandler certification and experience using Loading Shovel equipment.

This is a hands‑on, physically active role working in an outdoor operational setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safe and efficient operation of Telehandler and Loading Shovel machinery. 
  • Handling, sorting, and processing various waste and recyclable materials. 
  • Loading/unloading vehicles and managing material movement throughout the yard. 
  • Ensuring the yard is kept clean, tidy, and compliant with environmental standards. 
  • Conducting routine vehicle and equipment checks; reporting defects promptly. 
  • Adhering to all company Health & Safety procedures and site regulations. 
  • Assisting with general yard duties, including manual handling and waste segregation. 
  • Working collaboratively with supervisors and team members to meet operational goals.

Additional Details
 
  • Monday to Friday 
  • 45 hours per week 
  • 7.30am to 4.30pm
  • Unpaid lunch break included
  • 28 days annual leave inclusive of public holidays 
 
Remuneration 
  • Hourly Rate: £12.25 per hour 
  • TCLA Bonus: £50 per week (based on time and attendance criteria) 


Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

 
  • Valid Telehandler licence/certification – essential. 
  • Experience operating Loading Shovel machinery – essential. 
  • Previous experience in a waste, recycling, quarry, construction or yard environment preferred. 
  • Strong understanding of safe working practices. 
  • Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions. 
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to work effectively as part of a team.
Training and Development
 
The company is committed to developing its people. Operators will receive mandatory and role‑specific training to ensure competency, compliance and safe operation of plant and equipment. The following training may be required or recommended, and can be gained as part of employment: 

  • First Aid Training 
  • Harness Training 
  • Loading Shoval 
  • Manual handling 
  • Shunter Training 
  • Various SOPs
  • Telehandler (Above 9m) 
  • Working at Height
