Ports of Jersey is seeking a Marine Operations Technician to join our dynamic Marine Operations team. This is a varied, practical, and highly rewarding operational role—ideal for someone who enjoys vessel work, marine engineering tasks, outdoor activity, and supporting the safe running of Jersey’s harbours, marine infrastructure, and maritime services.
This role sits at the heart of Marine Leisure, Historic Harbours, VTS, and Port Operations, helping us keep Jersey moving by sea.
What you’ll be doing
As a Marine Operations Technician, you will play a key part in day‑to‑day maritime operations, including:
- Maintenance, servicing, inspection, and repair of Ports of Jersey vessels (including hull, propulsion, electrical systems, and deck equipment).
- Driving and operating the boat hoist and supporting boatyard operations safely and efficiently.
- Operating forklifts and plant, and carrying out fabrication and oxyacetylene cutting as required.
- Inspecting and maintaining marine infrastructure — ladders, fenders, moorings, pontoons, buoys, beacons and other AtoN equipment.
- Supporting marine logistics both ashore and afloat, assisting commercial and visiting vessels.
- Assisting with emergency response activities including pollution response, SAR support, and VTS/Coastguard operations.
- Acting as coxswain and crew on Ports of Jersey vessels, including pilotage/towage support, inspections, and emergency response. (On‑call duty roster)
- Maintaining equipment, spares, and workshop tools; ensuring safe use of complex, high‑value assets.
- Providing excellent service to harbour users, commercial operators, visiting mariners, and community stakeholders.
- This is a practical, varied and impactful role—every day is different, and your work will directly support the safety, resilience and smooth running of Jersey’s maritime services.
What we’re looking for
Essential
- RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (Commercially Endorsed) or IYT Master of Yachts Limited.
- Powerboat Advanced.
- STCW Basic Safety Training and appropriate MCAapproved GMDSS, RADAR, ECDIS, and AEC 1 qualifications.
- ENG1 medical clearance.
- Competence with hand tools, marine workshop equipment, hotwork operations, and lifting/hoist equipment.
- Valid driving licence
Desirable
- MCA Master <200GT CoC
- Demonstrable maritime industry experience.
- Vessel operations experience as coxswain or deckhand.
- MCA EDH, HGV licence, fabrication/welding skills

Working Environment
This is an active, outdoor role involving vessel handling, manual work, plant operation, and exposure to all‑weather marine conditions. Occasional involvement in distressing or sensitive situations may occur during emergency response.
