Job Overview

The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and timely quotations in support of Assembly Services operations at Swagelok Northern California, including performing contract reviews. This role collaborates cross-functionally with Commercial Sales, Engineering, Supply Chain, Operations, and customers to ensure requirements are clearly understood, feasible, and aligned with delivery commitments. The Estimator translates customer specifications, drawings, and bills of materials into cost-effective, executable solutions, ensuring all quotations reflect optimal technical solutions, accurate cost modeling, and alignment with both customer and company requirements.

This position plays a critical role in revenue growth, margin protection, and operational excellence by delivering complete, strategically priced quotations that can be successfully executed within operational constraints. This role is best suited for a professional with at least four (4) years of experience in estimating, cost analysis, or a related function within a manufacturing or industrial setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed Assembly Services quotations by reviewing customer documentation including engineering drawings, specifications, and bills of materials
  • Analyze material, labor, overhead, and outsourced service requirements to develop accurate and scalable cost models
  • Ensure all quotations align with approved pricing strategies and target margin expectations
  • Perform contract and purchase order reviews to confirm alignment with pricing, delivery commitments, technical scope, and compliance requirements
  • Collaborate with Commercial Sales, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Operations to define optimal technical and commercial solutions
  • Coordinate with Supply Chain Management to obtain and validate supplier quotations, lead times, and sourcing strategies
  • Coordinate with Engineering on custom parts and tolerance questions
  • Evaluate manufacturability, capacity constraints, and operational feasibility in partnership with production teams
  • Identify technical, commercial, and supply chain risks within quotations and escalate as appropriate
  • Utilize ERP/MRP systems to manage quoting workflows, documentation, and data accuracy
  • Maintain accurate Part Master and Supplier Master data
  • Manage opportunity documentation in accordance with company procedures and quality standards
  • Support audits, internal reviews, and compliance requirements as needed
  • Participate in and drive continuous improvement initiatives related to quoting accuracy, turnaround time, and margin performance
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and knowledge sharing to junior estimators to support team development and consistency
  • Actively participate in company personal and professional development programs

Skills, Competencies, Education & Work Experience

Skills & Competencies
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including PivotTables, XLOOKUP, structured references, and complex cost modeling
  • Proficiency in ERP/MRP systems (SAP Business One preferred), including BOM and routing validation and cost structure analysis
  • Proficiency in tools such as Bluebeam for drawing review and collaboration (preferred)
  • Strong understanding of multi-level cost modeling, margin strategy, and what-if scenario analysis
  • Ability to evaluate manufacturability, capacity constraints, and alternate technical solutions
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including root cause identification and corrective action development
  • Ability to lead cross-functional discussions and clearly communicate trade-offs in pricing and technical decisions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to present complex cost drivers in a clear, professional manner
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • High attention to detail and ownership of accuracy in complex quotations
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and business needs
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including overtime as required based on business needs
  • Continually required to sit or stand and work at a computer
  • Regularly required to perform work on a computer for extended periods of time

Education & Work Experience
  • Required:
    • Technical degree or equivalent practical experience
    • 4–7 years of estimating experience in mechanical assembly, fabrication, or custom manufacturing environments
    • Demonstrated ability to meet or exceed quote turnaround and performance KPIs
    • Strong ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, specifications, tolerances, and weld symbols
    • Experience performing multi-level cost modeling including material, labor, and outsourced operations
  • Preferred:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related discipline 
    • Advanced coursework in print reading, cost estimating, or manufacturing processes
    • Exposure to data tools such as Power Query or similar
    • Experience with fluid system components or Swagelok-related products
    • Experience in contract review, risk assessment, and technical quotation development
