Lead Design Engineer – Aerodynamic Surfacing
Permanent - Full TimeJob Overview
Are you an experienced aerodynamic surfacing specialist ready to lead at the highest level of motorsport? We’re looking for a Lead Design Engineer – Aerodynamic Surfacing to head a team of designers delivering world‑class aerodynamic geometry for CFD, wind tunnel and race car development.
You’ll own major aerodynamic surfacing projects end‑to‑end—ensuring geometry quality, legality, timing and performance—while continuously improving tools, workflows and ways of working.
This is a high‑impact role where you’ll combine technical excellence, leadership and strategic thinking to help drive the aerodynamic performance of our Formula One car—while contributing directly to our ambition of consistently competing at the front of the grid.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Lead, mentor and develop a team of aerodynamic designers, including performance reviews and recruitment.
- Manage the design, planning and delivery of aerodynamic geometry into CFD, wind tunnel testing and race car programmes.
- Own large‑scale aerodynamic design projects from concept through to release and manufacture.
- Ensure timing, quality and legality of geometry for wind tunnel and aerodynamic releases.
- Drive efficient workflows, tool development and long‑term process improvements.
- Develop and enhance parametric and surfacing methodologies in collaboration with aerodynamicists.
- Support FIA legality checking and maintain regulation box CAD models.
- Work closely with production and model build teams to ensure successful delivery of wind‑tunnel hardware.
- Provide clear progress reporting and early risk identification to senior stakeholders.
- Champion best‑in‑class standards in CAD, surfacing quality, culture and collaboration.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
We’re looking for a technically outstanding leader with deep F1 surfacing experience. You’ll bring:
- A degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience in aerodynamic surfacing design within Formula One.
- Expert knowledge of CATIA and advanced surface modelling techniques.
- Strong understanding of aerodynamics testing, wind tunnel workflows and CFD interfaces.
- Knowledge of composite manufacturing, GD&T, metrology and structural validation.
- Proven ability to manage complex projects under tight deadlines.
- Confidence working with FIA technical regulations and legality processes.
- Excellent communication, leadership and decision‑making skills.
- A proactive, inclusive and solution‑focused approach to problem solving.
