Job Overview

Please note, this is an internal only vacancy. Applicants should use their BSU email address to apply.

We are inviting applications for the role of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic), a key position within the University’s senior leadership team at an important point in our strategic development.

Working closely with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the role provides institutional leadership across our academic Schools, portfolio and direct delivery sites, shaping a coherent, future-facing offer across multiple locations and modes. This includes oversight of undergraduate, postgraduate and short course provision, and supporting the continued development of flexible lifelong learning pathways.

About the Role

The Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) will play a central role in delivering the academic aspects of our One University ambition, ensuring consistency of academic quality and standards across all locations of delivery, while enabling innovation and responsiveness within Schools, direct delivery and partnership provision. Acting as a key conduit between Schools and the University Executive Board (UEB), the role translates strategic intent into delivery and ensures that academic insight informs institutional direction.

The portfolio is broad and will evolve in line with strategic priorities, spanning academic development, performance and cross-university initiatives. The role contributes to Academic Board, Education Committee, the Digital Oversight Group and the University Leadership Group, and includes wider institutional responsibilities.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) deputises for the Deputy Vice-Chancellor as required and contributes to governance, academic assurance and strategic leadership through senior-level engagement.

This role is primarily based in Bath, although hybrid working is available.

About You

We are looking for a senior academic leader with experience of working across disciplines, teams and delivery models, and with the academic credibility to influence at a senior level. Experience of multi-site provision, partnerships, portfolio development and delivery will be important, alongside the ability to lead both strategically and through implementation.

This role may suit colleagues who are already operating at a senior level within the University, with experience of leading across Schools, functions or institutional initiatives. It will particularly appeal to those with a strong interest in shaping a future-focused academic portfolio and driving delivery across a complex, multi-site environment.
