We are excited to offer a full time, permanent opportunity for a passionate and experienced Lecturer in Animal Care to join our team. In this role, you’ll play an important part in shaping the future of our students, helping them gain the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the Animal Care industry. 

You’ll be responsible for delivering engaging lessons, supporting students through assessments, and providing guidance as they progress. This role will include teaching entry level 3, level 2, level 3 work-based and Level 3 Technical Qualifications in Animal care/ Management, preparing learners for further study and employment within the sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality, inspirational teaching and ensure access to learning, alongside undertaking associated tutorial duties
  •  Teach and assess learners at entry level 3, level 2 ,level 3 work based and Level 3 Technical Qualifications in Animal care/ Management programmes
  •  Provide teaching and assessment opportunities in line with relevant awarding body requirements to promote access to achievement
  •  Perform necessary administrative tasks for the effective operation of programmes, including preparation of schemes of work and assessments
  •  Manage a teaching load that is fair and equitable with the responsibilities of the role
  •  Act as a course tutor, supporting learners in achieving their targets by tracking progress and maintaining student records
  •  Contribute to continuous improvement in teaching and learning quality, enhancing the overall student experience at Sandwell College, focusing on attendance, retention, achievement, progression, and value-added measures
  •  Collaborate with external agencies, college partners, and local businesses to meet the diverse needs of learners

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Previous academic experience in Animal Care is highly desirable
  • Experience of teaching or assessing Learners at levels 1-3 in Animal Management is desirable
  • A recognised teaching qualification (Level 5 or above) is preferred, although candidates willing to work towards obtaining this qualification will also be considered
  • A level 3 or higher qualification in Animal management or relevant subject area
  • Experience working in an Animal Care role that is relatable to the areas taught is essential

Teaching Qualifications & Salary Banding

To be eligible for our Qualified Lecturer salary banding (£31,837 - £48,160), you must hold one of the following teaching qualifications:

Accepted Qualifications:
  • DTTLS (Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
  • Certificate in Education
  • PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education)
  • ProfGCE (Professional Graduate Certificate in Education) 
  • DET (Diploma in Education and Training)
  • DiT (Diploma in Teaching) – if for a vocational subject
If you do not hold one of the above qualifications, you will fall into our Unqualified Lecturer salary banding (£26,661 - £29,998).

Not Accepted as Stand Alone Qualifications:
  • PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
  • CTLLS (Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
  • CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) 
  • SFHEA (Senior Fellowship)
  • Masters in Education
  • TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language)
