Job Overview


An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled and experienced Fabrication & Welding Technician to join our team and provide specialist technical support within our engineering workshops. The role will play a key part in supporting teaching and learning by ensuring that equipment, machinery and resources are safe, well maintained and available to support practical workshop sessions.


You will use your specialist knowledge to operate and maintain a range of fabrication and welding equipment, demonstrate technical skills and safe working practices to staff and students, and provide guidance on the correct use of machinery and workshop facilities. The role will also involve supporting workshop set-up, maintenance, stock management and health and safety requirements, including risk assessments and COSHH procedures.


The successful candidate will contribute to maintaining a professional, safe and industry-focused workshop environment, helping students develop practical skills and supporting staff in the effective delivery of engineering programmes.

Key Responsibilities

Technical functions
  • Use specialist knowledge of the area of work to carry out a range of specialist and diverse tasks to support an effective, user-friendly and professional service. 
  • Provide general support for the teaching of students in the area.
  • Set up and operate a range of machinery/equipment to an agreed service level.
  • Demonstrate a range of complex skills and equipment to staff / students and instruct them on the safe use of equipment and techniques.
  • Support the design of the equipment / workshop layout.
  • Carry out maintenance tasks including a range of testing to ensure equipment remains in a good working condition / arrange safe disposal (including hazardous waste).  This will include more complex equipment which may require a licence to operate.
  • Carry out relevant portable appliance testing for area.
  • Establishes systems to ensure accurate records of maintenance etc. are kept.
  • Transport goods and equipment using trolleys / vehicles and complete site set up.
Staff related
  • Develop staff at a lower level in particular areas of expertise and/or specialist knowledge.
  • Assist with training of other groups of staff with regard to a particular area of expertise and / or specialist knowledge. 
Health and Safety
  • Undertake risk assessments to ensure risks are understood and mitigated.
  • Comply with internal and external health and safety guidelines, instructions and regulations.
Customer service/quality related
  • Ensure high levels of customer service promoting a positive image of the College.
  • Resolve problems and issues, diagnose faults and respond to complaints or queries, where appropriate refer on to the appropriate person.
  • Comply with set quality standards and procedural instructions.
  • Attend / arrange meetings as requested to support the work activities.
Finance/security related 
  • Assist with budget and resource management.
  • Monitor levels of stocks and consumables/basic equipment when required to do so order replacements acting within procurement policies.
  • Where it is identified as necessary handle cash/cash equivalents.
  • Comply with college security, stock control, cash-handling procedures, standards and audit requirements.
  • Comply with financial regulations within own area of work.
General
  • Help to ensure through good working practices that the objectives, values and aims of the Pillar and the college are achieved on time.

  • Responsible for the servicing maintenance of welding booths, welding manifold system and CNC Laths.
  • Ensure correct equipment is available in a timely way to support students and staff in workshop sessions.
All staff will be expected to:
  • Carry out such other relevant and appropriate duties within the framework of a post of this grade that may from time to time be required at a location determined by the needs of the service.
  • To make full use of new technology in all aspects of job requirements.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential Criteria
  • Relevant sector practical experience and trade skills.
  • Experience of maintaining trade equipment.
  • Experience in the effective use of Microsoft Office applications and / or other computer packages including Word documents and Excel spreadsheets. 
  • Level 2 qualification in English and Maths or willingness to achieve. 
  • Relevant maintenance knowledge within domestic, commercial and industrial applications.
  • Good practical skills and the ability to demonstrate to others.
  • Ability to interpret course specifications and syllabus to produce material requisitions.  
  • Good industry/college experience in a role relating to welding and fabrication 
  • Level 3 in Fabrication and mechanical engineering    
  • Ability to work both as a member of a team and independently using your own initiative.
  • Strong customer focus and communication skills.
