Job Overview

This position provides day-to-day EHS support to Operations-based functions, which may include maintenance, facilities, utilities, waste treatment, construction, engineering, supply chain, security, and laboratory operations.  The role partners with business leaders and employees to identify and manage EHS risks, maintain regulatory and company compliance, strengthen safe work practices, and support reliable operations.  Primary responsibilities are within Lake County, Illinois, with technical support provided to other AbbVie locations or teams as needed. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary EHS business partner for assigned Operations-based functions. 

  • Provide routine field presence, coaching, consultation, and practical EHS guidance to employees, leaders, project teams, and support functions; identify hazards and integrate effective controls into daily work. 

  • Apply strong technical knowledge of critical safe work requirements, including hot work, lockout/tagout and hazardous energy control, working at heights, confined space entry, and surface penetration. 

  • Conduct and support EHS risk assessments, job hazard analyses, pre-task planning, management-of-change reviews, and project or equipment reviews to ensure hazards are identified and controlled. 

  • Support compliance with applicable local, state, and federal EHS requirements and AbbVie standards through inspections, audits, documentation reviews, corrective-action tracking, and regulatory readiness activities. 

  • Lead or support incident and near-miss investigations, determine root and contributing causes, develop effective corrective and preventive actions, and verify timely completion. 

  • Develop and deliver EHS training, communications, and tools that address business needs, strengthen employee capability, and reinforce safe and compliant work practices. 

  • Provide EHS support for contractors and construction activities, including planning reviews, contractor engagement, field oversight, and resolution of safety concerns, while balancing these duties with broader operational support priorities. 

  • Maintain and communicate EHS metrics, trends, and key performance indicators; use data and field observations to establish priorities and recommend practical risk-reduction actions to business management. 

  • Provide technical support for EHS standards, procedures, systems, and improvement initiatives within areas of expertise, and represent AbbVie with regulatory agencies or external organizations when assigned.
