Position Purpose

The Intermediate Project Manager (IPM) supports the successful delivery of large capital projects (typically > US$25M) by partnering with one or more Project Managers across planning, engineering coordination, procurement, construction, commissioning, and controls. The IPM helps drive outcomes in safety, quality, scope, budget, schedule, risk, and reporting, ensuring data and decisions are accurate, measurable, auditable, and timely for the Capital Leadership Team and the Project Steering Committee.

Must be bilingual in English and French.

The IPM helps drive outcomes in safety, quality, scope, budget, schedule, risk, and reporting, ensuring data and decisions are accurate, measurable, auditable, and timely for the Capital Leadership Team and the Project Steering Committee.

Must be bilingual in English and French.

Core Activities

  • HSE Leadership: Model a zero-harm culture; participate in JHAs/PHAs, constructability, and pre-start reviews. Ensure contractor onboarding, permits, and method statements align with site and corporate requirements.
  • Planning, Controls & Governance: Support development/maintenance of the Project Charter and Execution Plan (PEP); ensure alignment to business objectives and stage-gates (FEL 1–3 through Execution).
  • Engineering & Procurement Coordination: Coordinate multi-disciplinary engineering deliverables and manage interfaces among the owner, EPC/EPCM, OEMs, and site stakeholders.
  • Construction & Field Management: Support site readiness (permitting, utilities, laydown, access), construction mobilization, and contractor kickoff. Maintain look-ahead schedules, progress curves, and quantity verification; validate timesheets.
  • Commissioning, Start-Up & Turnover: Coordinate systemization, punch-list management, pre-commissioning checklists, and turnover packages. Support performance testing, acceptance criteria validation, and capitalization close-out. 
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Reporting: Prepare and deliver concise updates to the Capital Leadership Team and Project Steering Committee (status, risks, mitigations, and forecasts).
  • Continuous Improvement: Capture lessons learned, standardize templates/tools, and contribute to updates of the Project Controls/Delivery Playbook.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (mechanical, electrical, civil/structural, chemical) or Construction/Project Management (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience:5–8 years of experience delivering industrial capital projects in heavy industry (aluminum/metals, mining/minerals, pulp & paper, chemicals, energy, or similar), including direct site exposure.
  • Expertise: Demonstrated capability in project coordination across FEL planning, baseline management, and execution support.
  • Technical Knowledge: Working knowledge of project controls (cost/schedule, forecasting, EVM), risk/change management, and contract administration.
  • Tools: Proficient with Primavera P6 or MS Project, and familiar with cost systems/ERPs and document control workflows.
  • Mobility: Ability to travel and work extended periods on site; eligibility for cross-border (US/Canada) travel as required.
  • Language: Bilingual English/French an asset (may be required for Quebec-based work).

Working Conditions

  • Combination of office and industrial site environments; PPE and fieldwork are routine.
  • Travel to active sites and vendor facilities; periodic off-shift or weekend work during critical construction/commissioning windows.

Performance Measures

  • HSE leading/lagging indicators; safe execution with zero significant incidents.
  • Predictability to scope/schedule/budget; accuracy of forecasts and change control discipline.
  • Quality and timeliness of reporting to PMs, Capital Leadership, and Steering Committee.
  • Stakeholder satisfaction and completeness of turnover/close-out deliverables.
