Internship - Bioinformatics

Job Overview

At Alamar, we are passionate about enabling our customers to make scientific discoveries that translate into clinical outcomes and benefit patients. Our team is growing quickly as we develop innovative approaches to measure critical protein biomarkers from liquid samples that can enable the earliest possible detection of disease. We believe the next frontier in biology is enabled by measuring proteins at higher sensitivity in highly multiplexed assays at the push of a button, which is something only Alamar can do. As we build our team, we seek collaborative, driven, intellectually curious people committed to solving complex challenges. Our culture rewards accountability and cross functional teamwork because we believe this enables the kind of breakthrough thinking that will accelerate our mission.

We are seeking a Bioinformatics Intern with a passion for building software tools and automating workflows that directly support R&D, Process Development, and Manufacturing teams. The successful candidate will write scripts and algorithms to streamline data workflows, work closely with our LIMS system (Benchling) to support R&D operations, develop internal web applications, and build testing frameworks that improve system reliability and scalability across the organization. This is a hands-on role offering the opportunity to work with innovative technology and collaborate with a highly talented, cross-functional team to accelerate our mission of addressing unmet research and medical needs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deploy internal web applications (e.g., using Streamlit or Flask) that support R&D, Process Development, and Manufacturing scale-up workflows.
  • Write Python scripts and develop algorithms to automate data wrangling, parsing, and analysis tasks, reducing manual effort and improving operational efficiency.
  • Work actively with our LIMS system (Benchling) to develop, improve, and maintain algorithms and workflows that support R&D teams.
  • Build unit and integration tests for internal applications and data pipelines to strengthen system reliability, scalability, and code quality.
  • Collaborate with scientists and engineers across R&D, Process Development, and Manufacturing to understand workflow requirements and translate them into robust software solutions.
  • Integrate data from multiple sources and platforms, including LIMS, APIs, and internal pipeline tools, ensuring data consistency, accuracy, and traceability.
  • Use version control (Git) and software development best practices to manage code, track changes, and support collaborative development.
  • Contribute to team discussions by sharing knowledge and promoting best practices in software engineering, testing, and automation.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a bachelor's or master's degree in bioinformatics, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong Python skills, including experience with scripting, automation, and algorithm development.
  • Comfort working with the command line and performing data wrangling tasks.
  • Familiarity with Git for version control.
  • Exposure to API integration, automated testing (unit and integration tests), or pipeline development is a plus.
  • Experience or coursework involving web application development using Python frameworks (e.g., Streamlit, Flask) is a plus.
  • Experience leveraging AI agents and AI-assisted development tools to accelerate work output and improve productivity is a plus.
  • Must be self-motivated with a positive "can do" attitude and strong project management skills.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Exemplifies our core values of:
    • Making external and internal customers our top priority
    • Fostering continuous learning and development
    • Encouraging out-of-the-box thinking and risk taking
    • Building a culture of innovation
    • Focusing on teamwork; operating with transparency, integrity, and honesty

What You'll Gain

  • Hands-on experience developing and deploying web applications, working with a LIMS system (Benchling), building algorithms, and creating testing frameworks that support real R&D and Manufacturing scale-up workflows.
  • Practical skills in Python, automation, pipeline integration, unit and integration testing, scalable development practices, and AI-assisted programming.
  • Exposure to industry tools, LIMS platforms, APIs, and complex data pipelines in a biotech environment.
  • Strengthened problem-solving and analytical abilities through meaningful contributions to operational efficiency.
  • Valuable technical and industry experience at a fast-growing startup at the forefront of early cancer detection.
