The Role

Responsible to: Heritage Building & Facilities Manager

Working Closely with: Building Maintenance Technician

General Description 

The General Maintenance Technician supports the Heritage Building & Facilities Manager in the day-to-day care, repair and upkeep of Battersea Arts Centre’s historic Grade II* listed building and associated facilities. The role ensures the building remains safe, compliant, welcoming and operational for artists, audiences, staff and partners, while respecting the sensitivity and requirements of a heritage environment.

Role Responsibilities

Strategic/Project Delivery

• Support the maintenance and care of heritage fabric, fixtures and finishes, escalating specialist issues where required.

• Use maintenance ticket system ensuring that maintenance requests are dealt with efficiently and appropriate records maintained.

• Assist with routine inspections of the building and plant, identifying defects, risks and future maintenance needs.

Team and Collaboration

• Support the Heritage Building & Facilities Manager with small projects, refurbishments and contractor supervision

• Contribute to a positive, collaborative working environment across operations, production and front of house teams.

• Respond promptly to maintenance issues during events and normal operations, helping minimise disruption.

• Set up and move furniture and equipment for events, meetings and operational needs.

Skills Contribution

• Undertake general building maintenance across multiple trades including basic carpentry, plumbing, painting and decorating, and minor electrical work (within competence).

• Carry out basic maintenance of building services such as lighting, HVAC interfaces, BMS interactions, doors, locks and fittings.

• Carry out planned and reactive maintenance across the venue in public areas, performance spaces, offices, bars and back of house spaces.

Business Delivery

• Maintain accurate records of works completed, defects identified and materials used. Ensuring we comply with all relevant legal frameworks and legislation, including construction, design and management, COSHH and Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

• Safely and efficiently manage the facilities resources, including management of stock and storage.

• Ensure all access services throughout the building operate efficiently and are given priority so that the building is fully accessible to all users.

• Follow BAC health and safety procedures, risk assessments and safe systems of work at all times.

• Report and appropriately escalate any risks or breaches according to BAC Health and safety policy

• Stay up to date on any relevant changes in legislation.

General Tasks

  • Be an active participant in BAC’s wider creative life, attending performances and events, and supporting the venue’s public-facing activities.

  • Contribute to staff meetings, cross-team collaborations, and organisational initiatives that support BAC’s mission and continuous improvement culture.

  • Maintain professional development, staying informed of trends in hospitality, retail, and event services to bring fresh ideas and improvements.

  • Ensure that BAC’s values of inclusivity, sustainability, and generosity are reflected in all aspects of your work and team leadership.

  • Undertake any other duties as reasonably required by the leadership of BAC

Person Specification

Knowledge:
the understanding of a subject or information that a candidate has

Essential:

• An understanding of working safely in occupied public buildings.

• Basic awareness of maintenance needs across multiple trades (plumbing, carpentry, decorating).

• Knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety legislation.

Desirable:

• Knowledge of heritage, listed or historic buildings.

• Basic knowledge of building services and compliance requirements.

• Awareness of arts, cultural or public facing venues and their operational needs.

Experience:
the practical application of the knowledge that a candidate has acquired through working or living

Essential:

• Proven experience in a general maintenance, facilities or building technician role.

• Practical experience in two or more of the following skillsets; general repairs and decoration, plumbing, drainage, electrical and carpentry/joinery

• Experience identifying and escalating maintenance issues appropriately.

Desirable:

• Experience working in a heritage, listed or historic building.

• Experience in an arts, cultural or public facing venue.

• Experience using or supporting building services systems (e.g. lighting, HVAC interfaces, BMS).

• Experience managing maintenance logs

• Experience with emergency lighting and fire alarm systems

• Experience managing stock

Skills:

• Practical skills across multiple trades, particularly plumbing, carpentry and decorating.

Desirable:

• Relevant trade qualifications or certifications.

• Skills in minor electrical work within competence.

• Fire Marshall trained

• First aid at work training

• Electrical certification

• Administrative skills including Microsoft Office

Terms & Conditions

This role is 5 days a week Monday-Friday; usual office hours are 10am-6pm. We offer flexible working where possible.

Occasional evening and weekend work will be required. All staff at Battersea Arts Centre are expected to attend performances and events and be a part of the artistic life of the organisation.

Salary
£16,078 gross per annum, £26,795 per annum full time equivalent

Hours
21 hours per week, excluding a daily one-hour lunch break

Overtime
No overtime payments; TOIL system

Annual Leave
4 weeks per year, pro rata (5 weeks following one full year of service)

Probation period
3 months, with a 6 week review

Notice period
1 month

Contract Period
6 months fixed term contract
