Contract Internship

Job Overview

The nurse will be responsible for the provision of care to clients/patients under the supervision of the Senior Nurse.S/he will participate in the assessment of clients/patients before they are reviewed by a clinician.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepare clinic rooms for counseling and examinations.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment for self, colleagues, and clients at all times.
  • Triage clients/patients presenting to the COE.
    • Accurately measure weights, heights, mid upper arm circumferences, and vital signs on children, adolescents and adults.
    • Obtain a clinical history, identifying chief complaints from clients and caregivers.
    • Interpret clinical status of clients/patients following triage and appropriately prioritize their service needs for the day.
    • Assess adherence to medication, and conduct pill counts prior to dispensing new medications.
    • Identify those with High Viral Load at triage and refer to clinician
  • Conduct rapid laboratory responsibilities, including but not limited to MRDT, POC blood glucose, and hemoglobin.
  • Must stay up to date on the latest Malawi HIV guidelines and use best practices in daily care.
  • Conduct Counselling Sessions (including but not limited to pre-ART, nutrition, family planning and Intensive Adherence Counselling)  
  • Perform basic nursing care responsibilities including administering medication prescribed for the clients.
  • Provide optimal care to the individual clients in a non-judgmental environment where clients and caregivers feel safe and comfortable.
  • Provide Cervical Cancer Screening services,  
  • Assist in assessment, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections.
  • Provide family planning services
  • Provide antenatal and postnatal services
  • Interview parents/caregivers of the failing clients.
  • Document in all relevant registers and Electronic Medical Registers.
  • Conduct routine educational sessions and health talks for patients and families in the clinic as well as for those on the wards.
  • Participate in outreach and training programs which may be conducted outside the clinic
  • Participate in journal club and seek out other continuing professional development opportunities including presentations of relevant topics as assigned from time to time.
  • Ensure the availability of the clinic resources in collaboration with the supervisor
  • Always observe and implement standing orders and regulations
  • Participate in Quality improvement projects.
  • Participate in abstract development for both local and international conferences
  • Perform any other duties assigned from time to time

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery obtained from a recognized institution with at least two years experience working in a busy clinic setting.
  • Registered with Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi
  • Certificate in Clinical Management of HIV in Children and Adults.
  • Experience in management of HIV, care of pediatric patients and antenatal care will be an advantage.
