AI Engineer

Make your mark for the innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) program at Boskalis and contribute at the forefront of strategically integrating AI into our operations to drive efficiency. Our AI Strategy is designed to tackle business challenges within strategically defined themes on our assets, dredging and offshore vessels and our primary process, our tenders and projects. 
 
To achieve this ambition, we have positioned a new AI department of 21 people at a corporate level. The department is working on our AI portfolio created by our senior business leaders and validated by our Board of Management. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement (Gen)AI solutions that fulfil business needs. 
 
This position will require a blend of technical expertise and a desire to understand our business. An enthusiastic motivation, drive and willingness to continuously keep learning. We are looking for someone with proven experience in LLM integration and who remains curious about new developments and ways develop successful application for our context and people.

Your responsibilities as an AI Engineer

Focused on developing, building, deploying and implementing AI models (e.g. LLM and machine learning techniques) and solutions for various projects. You will work closely together with the business user and domain expert and the Business Data engineer. 

• Develop, build, and deploy. AI solutions using Large Language Models (LLMs), including integration with vector databases, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines, and prompt engineering. 
• Apply frameworks for building scalable and modular AI solutions. 
• Take ownership of the quality and reliability of AI solutions. 
• Collaborate with diverse stakeholders (including vessel-related) to understand business requirements, translate them into technical AI solutions, and ensure effective communication to maintain alignment and progress. 
• Continuously learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies in the (Gen)AI field. 

Your qualities and experience 
You can move ahead as an AI engineer (+3 years) if you have: 

• Hands-on experience and/or certifications using Databricks and/or Azure AI foundry for LLM utilization, data processing, exploration, and AI development. 
• Strong skills in Python in the context of building and integrating LLM-based applications, including the use of vector databases (such as FAISS, Pinecone, or Azure AI Search). 
• Familiarity with frameworks like LangChain/LangGraph, Semantic Kernel, Pydantic and Model Context Protocol (MCP). 
• Experience in setting up RAG pipelines to combine contextual business data with generative AI.  
• Experience with Agile methodologies, particularly Scrum. 

The following competences are also important for the AI engineer: 

• Strong communication and collaboration skills and the ability to independently interact with end-users. 
• Empathy for the business context: understanding the end-user's use case and actively thinking about how AI can deliver value in the short term. 
• Ability to work independently on your own use case and translate technical possibilities into concrete solutions for business. 
• A mindset geared towards continuous learning and curiosity for tackling new challenges. 
• Ability to handle feedback and reset your course if needed.
