About the program

The Medically Supervised Injecting Room (MSIR) is an anonymous service providing supervised injecting, on site clinical care and access to health and social supports. The service plays a critical role in reducing overdose related harm and acting as a gateway to broader health and wellbeing services.

About the role

As a Registered Nurse within the MSIR, you will supervise clients before, during and after injecting episodes, providing clinical assessment, harm reduction education and emergency response in a fast paced and supportive environment. You will work closely with the MSIR Nursing and Harm Reduction teams to deliver compassionate, non judgemental and trauma informed care.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Observing and monitoring client wellbeing and responding to clinical alerts and behavioural contracts

  • Managing health emergencies and supporting the Nurse in Charge during critical incidents

  • Providing education on vein care, safer injecting and harm reduction strategies

  • Engaging clients to identify health needs and facilitate referrals to health and welfare services

  • Maintaining accurate and timely clinical documentation across MSIR systems

  • Providing needle syringe equipment and participating in outreach and syringe retrievals

  • Supporting overdose responses in the surrounding area as directed

  • Upholding dignity, respect and safety for all people who use the service

  • Acting up as Nurse in Charge following appropriate training when required

This is a permanent part time role with up to 1.2 FTE available, which may be filled across multiple appointments.

About you

You are a Registered Nurse who brings clinical confidence, emotional intelligence and a strong commitment to harm reduction and social justice.

You will bring:

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA

  • CPR Certificate including oxygen administration

  • First Aid Certificate

  • At least two years post graduate nursing experience

  • Strong computer skills and experience using clinical databases

  • An understanding of the health, social and legal issues impacting people who inject drugs

  • Highly developed communication, problem solving and conflict resolution skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team

Experience working with people who inject drugs, crisis management or psychosocial assessment will be highly regarded.
