Senior Network Tools Engineer - SolarWinds

Overview:

  • uncheckedWe are seeking a Senior Network Tools Engineer with deep expertise in SolarWinds to design, implement, optimize, and support enterprise network monitoring and observability platforms. This role is critical to ensuring the reliability, performance, and visibility of complex network environments across on-prem, cloud, and hybrid infrastructures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administer and maintain the SolarWinds Orion platform, including NPM, NCM, SAM, VNQM, and other modules.
  • Perform application-level tuning, upgrades, patching, and capacity planning.
  • Manage custom pollers, SNMP configurations, and agentless/agent-based monitoring across multi-vendor environments.
  • Design and optimize complex SWQL and SQL queries to support reports, dashboards, and alert tuning.
  • Configure and maintain alert logic, escalation policies, and notification integrations (e.g., with ServiceNow, email, Teams).
  • Work closely with infrastructure and application teams to ensure effective coverage, KPIs, SLAs, and alert hygiene.
  • Support and maintain custom dashboards and views tailored for different stakeholders.
  • Participate in incident triage and root cause analysis, leveraging SolarWinds logs and metrics.
  • Maintain security posture of the application, including RBAC, SNMPv3, and audit logging.
  • Contribute to and maintain Kanban board tasks and documentation related to SolarWinds projects and issues.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience managing SolarWinds environments (Orion Platform 2020.2.6 or newer).
  • Strong experience with Orion SDK, SWQL Studio, and SolarWinds API integrations.
  • Advanced SQL Server knowledge, including query optimization, performance tuning, and CTEs.
  • Expertise in SNMP, WMI, ICMP, and agent-based data collection mechanisms.
  • Familiarity with network topology mapping, NetPath, and NetFlow analysis.
  • Experience in large-scale monitoring environments (>1000 nodes).
  • Solid understanding of Windows Server, IIS, and system-level diagnostics.
  • Comfortable working in Kanban/Agile environments with tools such as Jira or Azure DevOps.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with multiple teams and technical stakeholders.

Preferred:

  • SolarWinds Certified Professional (SCP) or similar certification.
  • Exposure to ServiceNow integrations, REST APIs, and webhook configuration.
  • Knowledge of PowerShell for minor automation tasks related to configuration and reporting
