About the role
The Bronx Programs Youth Development Coordinator (“YD Coordinator”) is responsible for coordinating and overseeing all youth development initiatives and activities at the Covenant House New York (CHNY), including our crisis shelter, our new transitional sites in the Bronx (Rights of Passage), and our permanent housing programs (New Covenant and Transitional House/Rapid Re-Housing programs). Reporting to the Director of Youth Development, the YD Coordinator is an energetic, creative, and detail-oriented project manager who is mission-focused and thrives on working and building trusting relationships with adolescents and young adults. Responsibilities include managing, creating, and implementing a blend of social, recreational, and life skills activities geared toward developing social skills, building resilience, and fostering self-esteem. This includes planning and scheduling a wide variety of activities for weekly programming, including evening and weekends, providing staff coverage, and coordinating volunteers. Additionally, the Bronx Programs YD Coordinator supervises the Bronx-based YD programming team, part-time staff, volunteers, and subcontractors.
As CHNY is in the process of launching several new programs, the Bronx Programs YD Coordinator needs to be comfortable in a rapidly changing environment where processes and protocols are being developed and refined as the programs are operating.
What you'll do
- Create and coordinate age-appropriate recreational activities for young adults that promote team building and leadership development across multiple sites in the Bronx, including one (1) Manhattan site
- Facilitate Recreational programming across multiple sites in the Bronx, as well as at the Manhattan location, as needed or assigned by the YD Program Director and/or other CNHY senior leadership
- Oversee day-to-day recreational programming across multiple sites
- Works collaboratively with the Youth Development team to design and refine new programming for youth living in CHNY programs in the Bronx
- Travel between multiple sites in The Bronx and occasionally collaborate with the Manhattan-based YD programming team
- Supervise the assigned Bronx-based YD programming team.
- Create and manage an activities calendar for multiple sites across the agency, including holiday, evening, and weekend programming
- Assess recreational programs through evaluative site visits across multiple sites
- Assist with the coordination of agency-wide sporting events
- Assist the Director of Youth Development with the creation and implementation of additional programming that promotes life skills, financial literacy, creative and performing arts, etc.
- Assist with the execution of agency-wide special events.
- Oversee/Chaperone off-site trips
- Collaborate with leadership across multiple sites to plan and execute events to ensure high youth attendance
- Assist with youth recruitment for young adult programming as well as agency-wide events.
- Responsible for recruitment and youth attendance for recreation events, ensuring high attendance
- Maintains positive relationships with all young adults across all sites.
- Always upholds CHNY’s mission, vision, and principles, standards of conduct, policies, and procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned and needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
- A minimum of 2-3 years of Youth Development and/or related experience required.
- At least two years of strong leadership/management experience and an upbeat, energetic demeanor are required.
- Strong multitasking skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously are required.
- Excellent verbal, written, and problem-solving abilities required.
- Experience working with diverse groups required.
- Strong mediation/de-escalation skills required.
- Driver’s License required.
- Bilingual a plus.
- Overall flexibility in work schedule required, including weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed.
