The Principal, Sustainable Energies Group (SEG), plays a leadership role in analyzing investment opportunities across a variety of companies, performing due diligence processes, building financial models to evaluate investments, negotiating terms, executing transactions and managing the investment portfolio.

CPP Investments’ Sustainable Energies Group (SEG) combines the organization’s expertise in renewables, conventional energy and new technology and service solutions to position CPP Investments as the leading global energy investor. SEG has approximately $37 billion in assets, making it highly competitive and flexible in the large and dynamic global energy sector.
SEG takes advantage of growing market opportunities as the energy sector evolves and global power demand grows, especially for low-carbon energy alternatives. The group holds a diversified portfolio primarily comprised of long-term tangible assets, including renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and hydro, as well as conventional power, upstream oil & gas and midstream energy. It also invests in areas of innovation, technology and services to the energy industries.
Accountabilities:
- Contribute to setting the relevant investment strategy; help to organize deal pipeline, provide investment screening support and execute principal transactions.
- Lead research, analysis and evaluation of a variety of investment opportunities including managing the overall evaluation process.
- Build working relationships with colleagues and leaders across the firm, company management teams and investment partners, and third-party advisors.
- Perform and manage detailed due diligence processes (including scoping and hiring third-party advisors).
- Oversee development of complex financial models to assist in investment evaluation, structuring and financing.
- Lead the negotiation and execution of agreements and other transaction-related documents.
- Develop detailed investment committee recommendations and take a major role in both presenting and answering challenging technical questions.
- Oversee and manage multiple external parties (lawyers, accountants, tax and commercial advisors etc.) and begin to build new relationships with advisors / partners to help with deal sourcing.
- Assist in the monitoring of existing portfolio companies.
- Oversee and mentor junior members of the team, be able to troubleshoot issues / questions and to offer guidance and support.
