The Engineering Team develops and delivers high-quality products through robust design and manufacturing excellence. As a Tooling Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, development, qualification, and sustainment of tooling used in mass production. This role requires you to works closely with Product Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and suppliers to ensure tooling solutions meet quality, cost, and schedule objectives.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and validation of production tooling, including injection molds, die-casting tools, stamping tools, and assembly aids.
- Partner with Product Engineering and NPI teams to ensure tooling requirements are aligned with product design, manufacturing processes, and volume expectations.
- Drive Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Tooling (DFT) reviews to ensure robust, manufacturable, and cost-effective tooling solutions.
- Review and approve tooling designs, mold flow analysis, and tooling layouts provided by suppliers or toolmakers.
- Manage tooling fabrication, trial runs, and debug activities, including T0/T1/T2 trials, capability studies, and process validation.
- Lead tooling qualification activities such as FAI, PPAP, and process capability (Cp/Cpk) to ensure tooling meets design and quality requirements.
- Troubleshoot tooling-related issues during ramp-up and mass production, driving root cause analysis and corrective actions using structured problem-solving tools (8D, 5-Why, Fishbone).
- Support cost-reduction initiatives through tooling optimization, cycle time reduction, cavity balance improvements, and tool life enhancement.
- Work closely with suppliers and contract manufacturers to qualify new toolmakers and manage ongoing tooling performance.
- Establish and maintain tooling documentation, including maintenance plans, spare parts lists, and engineering change records.
- Support transfer of tools between sites and ensure tooling readiness for volume production.
- Manage multiple tooling projects simultaneously while communicating progress, risks, and mitigation plans to stakeholders.
