Design Engineer - Wet Utilities
Full-time Mid-Senior LevelJob Overview
Role Summary
We are seeking an experienced Wet Utility Design Engineer to join our utilities team. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, hydraulic modelling, detailed design and documentation for foul sewer, stormwater drainage, potable water, fire-fighting and treated sewage effluent (TSE) networks. The role requires hands‑on experience with hydraulic modelling software (WaterGEMS and SewerGEMS) and strong knowledge of gravity and pressurized network design.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead or contribute to the full design lifecycle for wet utilities: concept, feasibility, detailed design, construction documentation and handover.
- Develop hydraulic models for gravity and pressurized networks using WaterGEMS and SewerGEMS (or equivalent), including calibration, validation and scenario analysis.
- Design foul sewer networks: pipe sizing, gradients, manholes, junctions, pumping stations, and connection strategies in accordance with local standards and good practice.
- Design stormwater drainage systems: open drains, closed conduits, culverts, detention/retention solutions, sustainable drainage (SuDS) measures and flood-routing analysis.
- Design potable water distribution systems: network layout, pipe sizing, service connections, pressure management, and water quality considerations.
- Design fire-fighting water networks: hydrant layouts, flow and pressure checks, booster pumps, and compliance with local fire codes and insurance requirements.
- Design TSE (treated sewage effluent) reuse/irrigation distribution systems: pipework, storage, quality control and risk mitigation.
- Produce detailed drawings, specifications, schedules, bill of quantities, and construction tender documents using CAD and/or BIM tools.
- Prepare technical reports, design calculations and design risk assessments; ensure designs meet local regulations, utility company requirements and industry standards.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (civil, structural, mechanical, environmental) and external stakeholders (clients, authorities, utility providers, contractors).
- Provide technical support during procurement and construction phases, including responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings and conducting site visits.
