The Department: Platform Security

The Role: Senior Manager, Platform Security

Gemini takes a cloud-first approach to our services, platforms, and vendors, allowing the organization to continue scaling with hypergrowth hiring, innovative product development, and demanding customer needs. To achieve that scale securely, Gemini has a dedicated Platform Security team whose mission is to enable the business to achieve secure-by-design architectures, implement best-in-class security technologies, and help our engineering partners to achieve security success easily & confidently. To further that mission, we’re looking for a new leader to join the existing team to take our vision, strategy, internal partnerships, business alignment, & technical expertise to the next stage of maturity. At Gemini, our best leaders lead from the trenches—we need this person to remain hands-on, contributing code and technical solutions alongside their team as needed to unblock work, maintain technical context, and lead by example.

This role is required to be in person twice a week at either our San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY office.

Responsibilities:

  • Elevated Technical & Strategic Leadership: Serve as the senior technical authority for the Platform Security team, driving the engineering vision and architecture to achieve secure-by-design outcomes
  • Hands-on Technical Mentorship & Contribution: Lead by example, providing deep-dive technical guidance, unblocking complex engineering challenges, and contributing code or technical solutions alongside the team as needed
  • Platform Security Roadmap Ownership: Define and champion the technical roadmap, prioritizing initiatives that measurably advance the security architecture, reduce toil through automation, and increase the maturity of platform capabilities
  • Cross-Functional Technical Alignment: Partner with key engineering and product teams to embed secure-by-design principles, translating technical needs and challenges into scalable, pragmatic security solutions
  • Security Standards & Governance: Guide the creation of technical security standards, procedures, and best practices that ensure functional security outcomes and compliance with GRC/Audit requirements
  • Program Measurement & Optimization: Establish clear, technical Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to evaluate the success and efficiency of the security platform and guide resource allocation and prioritization
  • Build vs. Buy Decisions: Oversee relevant third-party vendor relationships and lead the technical evaluation for "build vs. buy" decisions to strategically fill capability gaps within the platform
  • Enablement & Self-Service: Champion a customer-first approach by implementing self-service security solutions that minimize engineering friction, accelerate agility, and provide value-oriented ways to solve problems
  • Talent Development & Scaling: Drive the growth of the team through hiring plans and active, hands-on mentorship to develop the next generation of security engineers and leaders

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of leadership experience for cloud-native engineering and/or security teams, with a strong preference for Amazon Web Services (AWS)-based organizations
  • 7+ years of direct, technical experience in relevant roles (e.g., Platform Engineering, Security)
  • Strong experience in AWS, EKS (Kubernetes), IAM, Terraform, GitHub Enterprise Cloud
  • Experience leveraging industry security frameworks & standards that act as the basis of maturing the overall security program and enable successful business outcomes
  • Comfortable with hiring & scaling a team
  • Prior success in leading a team through organizational change management, with a strong preference for start-up experience in a technology-centric business
  • Able to easily communicate with technical stakeholders at their level, hearing their feedback and translating those needs or concerns into program-level outcomes
  • Pragmatic about security requirements, ignoring “best practices” that don’t make sense to the needs of the business by leveraging your team’s expertise for decision making
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with an attention to detail
