Senior Scientist I, Synthetic Biology
Job Overview
About Generate:Biomedicines
Generate:Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of machine learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology™ to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. The Company has built a machine learning-powered biomedicines platform with the potential to generate new drugs across a wide range of biologic modalities. This platform represents a potentially fundamental shift in what is possible in the field of biotherapeutic development.
We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!
Generate:Biomedicines was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received nearly $700 million in funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover, Massachusetts with 300+ employees.
The Role:
We are seeking a creative and motivated Scientist I to join Generate’s Prototyping Lab. This group sits at the intersection of synthetic biology, ultra–high-throughput screening technologies, and machine learning, developing novel biological and biochemical workflows that drive large-scale data generation for our discovery engine.
The successful candidate will contribute to the design, execution, and analysis of next-generation pooled functional screening experiments that interrogate large protein variant libraries. You will collaborate closely with experienced scientists and engineers across Generate’s Protein Sciences and Machine Learning teams, learning from a world-class environment for technology development while making meaningful experimental contributions to transformative science.
This role is onsite at our Somerville, MA location, Monday through Friday.
Here's how you will contribute:
- Execute experimental workflows for pooled protein display and screening technologies under the guidance of senior scientists.
- Partner with Synthetic Biology, Cell-Free Protein Synthesis, and Mass Spectrometry teams to run and optimize pooled experiments.
- Assist in the design and construction of DNA libraries and in the analysis of next-generation sequencing (NGS) data.
- Support assay development and optimization for high-throughput functional screens in both in vitro and cell-based systems.
- Maintain detailed experimental records, interpret data, and communicate findings in internal meetings.
- Contribute to a collaborative, cross-functional environment that integrates wet lab biology with computational modeling and data science.
- Stay current with scientific literature and emerging technologies in synthetic biology, protein engineering, and screening platforms.
The Ideal Candidate will have:
- PhD in synthetic biology, molecular biology, biophysics, biomedical engineering, or a related field with 0–4 years of relevant experience
- Hands-on experience with molecular cloning, recombinant protein expression, and/or pooled library construction.
- Familiarity with high-throughput screening techniques, NGS workflows, or data analysis tools.
- A basic understanding of statistical data analysis and interest in learning computational or scripting tools (Python or R experience is a plus).
- Strong organizational skills, scientific curiosity, and attention to detail in experimental execution.
- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and communicate results clearly.
- A growth mindset and enthusiasm for learning new technologies and approaches
Who will love this job:
- Creative scientists who are passionate about building next-generation experimental platforms.
- Biologists who excel at working synergistically with computational partners to solve ambitious problems.
