Provide strategic advice and support across the organisation to ensure that Council’s communications are appropriate, branded, relevant and targeted, and achieve the strategic objectives of Hume City Council.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Contribute to the development and delivery of communications plans to raise awareness and inform our community about Council’s services, programs, projects, initiatives, and events.
  • Provide strategic communications for key decisions of the Council.
  • Support the development, execution, and evaluation of strategic communications campaigns.
  • Support the development of high-level strategic communications advice for senior decision-makers on key issues, policy matters and implementation priorities to support Council objectives.
  • Provide trusted advice and thought leadership to the Coordinator, Strategic Campaigns and Media and Manager, Strategic Communications on a range of issues.
  • Support the strategic review of Council’s communications tools and recommend and implement changes to ensure that they are engaging, innovative, targeted, appropriate, and cost-effective. 
  • Participate in local, regional, and state networks/organisations to keep up to date with current communications trends, practices, and requirements.
  • Support the development of strategic reports and conduct key stakeholder briefings on high-risk issues to enhance the reputation of Council.
  • Develop high-level narratives, ensuring strong and consistent key messaging across all strategic communications activities.
  • Provide specialist writing and editing for a range of communications materials and channels that are tailored for various external and internal audiences and stakeholders.

The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role:

  • Strategic mindset – Proven ability to plan, implement, and evaluate communications and campaign strategies that deliver measurable outcomes.
  • Exceptional communication skills – Specialist writing and editing skills for diverse audiences, with clarity and impact across digital, social, and traditional channels.
  • Political and stakeholder awareness – Strong understanding of local, state, and federal government environments and experience navigating politically sensitive issues.
  • Campaign expertise – Demonstrated success in developing and managing integrated campaigns, including budget oversight and ROI analysis.
  • Project leadership – Ability to manage multiple priorities, coordinate stakeholders, and deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Analytical capability – Skilled in interpreting data and insights to refine strategies and improve performance.
  • Collaboration and influence – Ability to build relationships and gain cooperation from people with diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Digital proficiency – Experience with digital marketing platforms, social media management tools, and emerging communication technologies.

Required Certifications & Qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualifications and/or substantial demonstrated experience in communications, public relations, marketing, emergency management communications or a similar field.
  • Dedicated years of experience in campaign strategy and management
  • Proven track record of developing and executing successful marketing campaigns
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and translate insights into actionable strategies
  • Proficiency in digital marketing platforms and social media management tools
  • Excellent project management and budgeting skills
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • A current driver’s licence.
