We are seeking a reliable, hands-on and safety-conscious General Maintenance Assistant to support the upkeep and functionality of ikeja’s facilities and operational sites on a 3-month fixed-term basis. This role is responsible for performing routine maintenance, responding to minor repair needs, assisting with preventative maintenance schedules and ensuring our workspaces remain safe, clean and fully operational.
We are looking for individuals who are self-directed, practical, detail-oriented and comfortable working on the ground across the areas they support. You should take pride in your work, be eager to learn and be able to adapt to a variety of maintenance tasks - from basic plumbing and carpentry to painting, moving equipment and general site support.
As part of this role, you will work closely with the Maintenance Supervisor. Your contribution will be essential to maintaining a professional, safe and efficient environment for both staff and visitors. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Routine & Preventative Maintenance:
- Conduct regular inspections of facilities to identify repair or maintenance needs.
- Carry out basic repairs and maintenance (e.g., minor plumbing, electrical fixes, door/lock repairs, shelving, furniture).
- Support preventative maintenance schedules to reduce breakdowns and downtime.
Repairs & Fault Response:
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests logged by staff.
- Diagnose minor faults and either resolve them directly or escalate where specialist support is required.
- Track recurring issues and highlight root causes to the Maintenance Supervisor.
Site Upkeep & Safety:
- Ensure facilities are clean, orderly and maintained to ikeja standards.
- Replace/repair damaged fixtures and fittings where needed.
Support for Projects & Setups:
- Assist with office/site setups, moves and minor refurbishments.
- Support contractors during larger maintenance work by preparing sites and monitoring progress.
Tools, Stock & Admin:
- Maintain tools and ensure correct storage and safe usage.
- Monitor and request replenishment of maintenance supplies and consumables.
- Record work completed and provide simple reports/updates to the Maintenance Supervisor.
Requirements
- Grade 12 / Matric (required).
- Trade certification advantageous (e.g., electrical, plumbing, carpentry, handyman training).
- Valid driver’s license advantageous (if travel between sites is expected).
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience in general maintenance, facilities support, or handyman work.
- Proven ability to perform a wide variety of basic repairs and upkeep tasks.
- Experience working in office, retail, warehouse, or multi-site environments is beneficial.
- Familiarity with workplace safety standards and correct tool usage.
Skills and Competencies:
- Practical, hands-on ability with common maintenance tasks.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, painting and simple electrical work.
- Strong attention to detail and pride in quality workmanship.
- Able to work independently and manage time across multiple small tasks.
- Good communication skills with internal teams and external contractors.
- Safety-minded and able to follow procedures and instructions.
- Problem-solver who can diagnose issues logically.
- Physically fit and comfortable with lifting, carrying and working on your feet.
- Willing to learn new maintenance skills and take guidance.
- Reliable, punctual and proactive.
