THE ROLE

We are seeking a proactive and skilled Mechanical Leader to oversee the operations of our workshop. The ideal candidate will coordinate a team of mechanics, establish repair priorities, manage spare parts and stocks, and maintain budgetary control, all while upholding high standards of quality and safety.

 

WHAT WILL YOU WORK ON?

Team Coordination:

  • Support the daily coordination of mechanics, including task prioritization, scheduling, and work allocation.
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance and coaching to team members.
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performance workshop environment.

Workshop and Vehicle Maintenance:

  • Perform and oversee mechanical repairs, diagnostics, servicing, and preventive maintenance on Indie Campers’ fleet.
  • Work primarily with diesel light commercial vehicles, campervans, and related vehicle systems.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure safety, quality, and compliance with internal standards.
  • Act as the escalation point for complex technical issues or recurring vehicle problems.

Inventory and Spare Parts Management:

  • Monitor stock levels of tools, spare parts, consumables, and workshop materials.
  • Coordinate with suppliers to ensure timely availability of required parts.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and implement cost-control measures.

Reporting:

  • Track and report key workshop metrics, including repair turnaround time, vehicle downtime, and cost control.
  • Recommend improvements to workshop processes, safety practices, and vehicle readiness standards.

SOPs, Health & Safety, and Compliance,:

  • Ensure all workshop activities comply with relevant health, safety, and operational standards.
  • Conduct regular checks to identify risks, hazards, and process gaps in the workshop.
  • Support the review, implementation, and sign-off of workshop SOPs, handbooks, and safety-related procedures, where authorized.
  • Promote strong compliance with safety practices, documentation standards, and company procedures.
  • Support audits, inspections, and corrective action plans when required.

 

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

  • Proven experience as a mechanic, diesel mechanic, automotive technician, or workshop lead.
  • Strong experience working with diesel vehicles, ideally light commercial vehicles, vans, campervans, or similar fleet vehicles.
  • Relevant automotive trade qualification, ideally NZQA Level 4 or equivalent in automotive, light automotive, heavy automotive, diesel, or mechanical engineering.
  • Strong understanding of workshop health and safety standards, vehicle compliance, and repair quality requirements.
  • Ability to support or sign off SOPs, handbooks, or safety procedures, where legally and internally authorized.
  • Experience coordinating or mentoring other mechanics is highly valued.
  • Knowledge of spare parts, stock control, and supplier coordination.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a hands-on, practical mindset.
  • Organized, reliable, and able to prioritize work in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work with local operations, regional teams, and external suppliers.
  • Has valid NZ driving license
  • Fluency in English.

 

NICE TO HAVES

  • Experience in campervans, rental vehicles, fleet operations, or tourism/mobility businesses.
  • Prior workshop leadership or team coordination experience.
  • Experience supporting audits, compliance checks, or safety documentation.
  • Health and Safety Representative training or certification, or equivalent workplace health and safety experience.
  • Class 2, 4, or 5 driver licence, where relevant.
