Job Overview

Position Summary

The Tooling Engineer will be responsible for managing supplier tooling manufacturing processes related to Plastic, Elastomer, Thixo and Metal Injection molding.

As a key member of the team, the incumbent will have responsibility for performing tooling, molding processes and tooling validation engineering activities supporting multiple Intuitive Surgical products. This person will also develop supplier quality systems, ensure capacity support demand and implement changes to manufacturing processes to effectively sustain suppliers and parts in production.

The successful candidate will be based in Singapore and will work closely with suppliers, cross-functional engineering teams, and supply chain functions to develop and sustain high-performing suppliers that meet Intuitive’s quality and business objectives.

Roles and Key Responsibilities

Supplier Selection and Development

  • Support tooling supplier strategy, selection, evaluation, and qualification for molded components and assemblies.
  • Evaluate suppliers based on technical capability, business performance, and quality metrics.
  • Develop suppliers’ technical and quality systems to meet Intuitive’s standards for production readiness and ongoing performance.
  • Manage supplier relationships to ensure long-term collaboration and alignment with company objectives.

Tooling and Process Engineering

  • Co-select appropriate manufacturing processes with R&D designers.
  • Lead the design, development, and qualification of molds, tools, and fixtures to support both new product introduction (NPI) and sustaining production.
  • Review product designs for manufacturability and provide feedback to optimize tooling performance, cost, and quality.
  • Perform and review mold flow analysis, process capability studies, and design reviews to ensure robust tooling solutions.
  • Drive the execution of production part qualification deliverables, including pFMEA, Gage R&R, process validation (IQ/OQ/PQ), first article inspections, and capability analysis.
  • Manage supplier process changes through the Supplier Change Request (SCR) and Engineering Change Order (ECO) systems.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for tooling or molding-related nonconformances.
  • Establish preventive maintenance programs and continuous improvement plans to extend tooling life and ensure consistent performance.

Supplier Performance and Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor supplier performance through data-driven metrics covering quality, cost, delivery, and capacity.
  • Analyze trends and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Facilitate cross-functional collaboration with Designers, Supplier Engineers, and Quality Engineers to resolve supplier performance issues and implement corrective/preventive actions.
  • Contribute to supplier performance reviews, scorecards, and strategic business reviews.
  • Support business continuity planning by assessing supplier risk, capacity, and scalability.
