Summary of the role

The SQL Server DBA is responsible for the overall health, performance, and security of all Microsoft SQL Server database environments. The core focus is on maintaining high availability (HA), implementing robust disaster recovery (DR) plans, and ensuring optimal database performance to support critical business applications.

Responsibilities of the role:

  • Design, implement, and manage High Availability/Disaster Recovery (HA/DR) solutions, primarily utilizing Always On Availability Groups (AGs), Failover Cluster Instances (FCIs), and Log Shipping.
  • Manage comprehensive backup and recovery operations, including periodic validation through DR drills.
  • Install, configure, and patch SQL Server instances across multiple versions (e.g., 2016, 2019, 2022).
  • Proactively monitor, analyze, and tune SQL Server performance using DMVs and built-in tools.
  • Expertly analyze and optimize complex T-SQL queries, stored procedures, and database objects (indexes, statistics).
  • Maintain strict security models, managing logins, users, roles, and permissions according to the principle of least privilege.
  • Schedule and execute essential maintenance tasks (e.g., DBCC, index rebuilds) using SQL Server Agent.
  • Develop and manage SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) packages for ETL processes.
  • Collaborate with development teams on schema changes, data modeling, and code deployment.
