Role Overview
The Painting Technician is a skilled craftsperson responsible for all surface finishing work across custom event fabrication projects. Operating in a fast-paced workshop environment, this role demands expertise in applying various paint types, finishes, and surface treatments to diverse materials including wood, metal, foam, and fabric. The technician must consistently deliver high-quality, visually accurate results within tight project deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Surface Preparation: Sand, prime, seal, and prepare all surfaces (wood, MDF, metal, foam) prior to painting to ensure optimal adhesion and finish quality.
  • Paint Application: Apply paints, lacquers, varnishes, and specialty coatings using brushes, rollers, airbrush, and spray guns as appropriate to each material and finish requirement.
  • Colour Matching & Mixing: Accurately mix and match paints to client-specified RAL/Pantone colour references, swatches, or design briefs.
  • Specialty Finishes: Execute aged, distressed, metallic, faux-texture, and decorative effects on props, furniture, and large structural builds.
  • Material Compatibility: Select appropriate paint types and primers based on substrate material (foam, MDF, steel, fabric) to ensure durability and visual quality.
  • Quality Control: Inspect finished surfaces for defects, touch up as required, and ensure all deliverables meet project visual standards before dispatch.
  • Workshop Maintenance: Maintain painting tools, spray equipment, and mixing area in clean working condition; manage paint inventory and waste disposal per safety standards.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with carpentry, fabrication, and project teams to align on finish schedules, colour sign-offs, and delivery timelines.
