Job Overview

Who we're looking for

We are seeking a skilled Contract Engineer to design a dual-purpose mechanical component that functions as both structural mounting hardware and a thermal heat sink for a quadrotor drone. You will be working with existing CAD models for the attachment points. The primary challenge is to deliver a fully parametric design that balances three critical constraints: efficient heat dissipation, structural rigidity, and minimal weight.

What you’ll do

Key Responsibilities

●      Parametric Design: Create robust 3D CAD models using SolidWorks or FreeCAD. The design must be fully parametric to allow for agile iteration.

●      Weight Optimization: Employ design strategies (such as pocketing, thinning, or topology optimization) to achieve the lowest possible mass without compromising thermal capacity or structural safety factors.

●      Thermal & Structural Integration: Design the hardware to effectively conduct heat away from the source while serving as a secure mounting interface.

●      Integration: Incorporate provided CAD models of existing attachments to ensure perfect fitment.

●      Prototyping & Validation: Oversee the manufacturing of initial sample runs. Review physical prototypes for fit, finish, weight targets, and thermal performance.

●      Vendor Coordination: Liaise with machine shops to resolve DFM (Design for Manufacturing) issues.

    How we decide

    Required Qualifications

    ●      Experience: 5+ years in Mechanical Engineering or Product Design.

    ●      Core Skills: Expert proficiency in parametric modeling (SolidWorks or FreeCAD).

    ●      Lightweighting Expertise: Demonstrated experience designing high strength-to-weight ratio components (e.g., aerospace, drones, or performance automotive parts).

    ●      Thermal Expertise: Experience designing heat sinks and thermal interfaces.

    ●      Manufacturing Knowledge: Familiarity with CNC machining and aluminum alloys

    Deliverables

    1. Native 3D CAD files
    2. Mass properties report and weight reduction analysis.
    3. Validation of the first sample run (inspection and functional confirmation).

    Location & Logistics

    ●      Princeton, NJ Preference: We strongly prefer a candidate who can visit onsite in Princeton, NJ, to review physical prototypes and fitment.

    ●      Remote Candidates: Remote candidates will be considered but must demonstrate a clear plan for managing prototype reviews and vendor communication remotely.

This is a month-to-month contract role, with potential for extension depending on business needs.
