Your Role
As a GIS Data Specialist, you will help develop and optimize GIS mapping solutions, with a strong focus on speeding up GIS applications and ensuring robust GIS data management across the lifecycle (ingestion, validation, storage, publishing, and consumption).
You will:
- Develop, enhance, and maintain GIS web maps and mapping applications (e.g., interactive layers, symbology, filters, search, and spatial analysis features).
- Diagnose performance bottlenecks and speed up GIS applications (rendering, layer loading, spatial queries, tiling strategies, caching, API performance, network payload, and client-side optimization).
- Manage end-to-end geospatial data workflows: data ingestion, cleaning, transformation, QA/QC, versioning, metadata, and documentation.
- Design and maintain spatial data stores (e.g., PostGIS / enterprise geodatabases) and optimize spatial indexing and query performance.
- Publish and maintain geospatial services (feature services, map services, tiles/Vector tiles) with best practices for reliability, scalability, and security.
- Implement automation for repetitive GIS/data tasks (ETL pipelines, validation scripts, scheduled jobs), leveraging AI-assisted development practices where relevant.
- Collaborate with product, UX, and engineering teams to translate business needs into usable map experiences and maintain high-quality geospatial outputs.
- Ensure data governance, access controls, and compliance aligned with enterprise and client requirements.
- Contribute to continuous improvement: better standards, reusable components, documentation, and knowledge sharing.
Who You Are
- Proven experience working with GIS data and mapping applications, including performance considerations for real-world use.
- Strong understanding of geospatial concepts: projections, coordinate systems, spatial joins, topology, geocoding, raster/vector fundamentals.
- Comfortable with GIS data management (data modeling, QA/QC, metadata, versioning, lineage, and publishing).
- Solid skills in SQL and spatial querying; experience optimizing queries and indexes is a plus.
- Experience with at least some of the following tools/technologies (or equivalent):
- GIS: ArcGIS (Online/Enterprise), QGIS
- Spatial data: PostGIS, GeoPackage, enterprise geodatabases
- Web mapping: Leaflet, OpenLayers, Mapbox (or similar)
- Geo tooling: GDAL/OGR, FME (nice to have)
- Scripting: Python (preferred) and/or JavaScript
- You can communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders, explaining trade-offs and proposing pragmatic solutions.
- You’re comfortable working in English with international teams (spoken and written).
