THE ROLE
Software Development Engineer - 2 (Backend)
We’re looking for a Software Development Engineer - 2 (Backend) to join our growing engineering team. In this role, you will design and build scalable backend systems and contribute to solving complex problems related to performance, reliability, and scalability. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software while maintaining strong engineering standards. Success in this role means taking ownership of modules, delivering robust solutions, and continuously improving system performance and reliability. You will also contribute to mentoring junior engineers and driving best practices within the team.
Responsibilities:
- Design and implement software features and backend components following best practices and coding standards with minimal supervision.
- Identify root causes of complex issues related to scale, performance, and system stability, and contribute to effective solutions
- Propose and implement short-term and long-term fixes to improve system reliability and efficiency
- Stay up to date with new technologies, frameworks, and development practices, and apply them to improve system performance
- Write and maintain technical documentation, including APIs, design documents, and code-level documentation
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to improving coding standards and engineering best practices
- Mentor junior engineers and support their learning and development
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software solutions
- Take ownership of modules and ensure timely delivery with high quality
- Contribute to hiring efforts by helping identify and evaluate strong engineering talent
Qualifications:
- Strong computer science fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, and system design basics
- 2+ years of experience working with Java, Spring/Spring Boot, and SQL/NoSQL databases
- Experience building and maintaining scalable backend systems or web applications
- Good understanding of system performance, scalability, and reliability concepts
- Ability to debug and solve moderately complex technical problems
- Understanding of software development best practices and coding standards
- Ability to work effectively in fast-paced, ambiguous environments
- Strong communication skills to collaborate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Curious, self-driven, and eager to learn and experiment with new technologies
Preferred:
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred)
- Familiarity with microservices architecture and distributed systems
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and basic DevOps practices
- Exposure to containerization tools like Docker
- Prior experience working in startup or high-growth environments
