Technical Writer, Energy Storage

Redwood Materials is pioneering a sustainable circular economy for lithium-ion batteries by transforming recycled materials into critical inputs for energy storage and next-generation battery technologies. We are seeking a technically minded Technical Writer to support our Compliance Engineering function by translating complex regulatory and standards requirements into clear, accurate, and auditable technical documentation that enables product certification, manufacturing readiness, and safe deployment at scale. 

This role works closely with compliance engineers, product engineering, manufacturing, quality, and certification bodies to ensure Redwood’s energy storage products are supported by defensible, consistent, and standards-aligned documentation. 

Responsibilities will include:

Technical Documentation Development and Support: 

  • Assist with the development and maintenance of technical documentation to ensure alignment with applicable regulatory and standards requirements, including: 
  • Product datasheets and technical specifications 
  • Installation, operation, and maintenance (IOM) manuals 

Compliance Documentation Ownership: 
Directly own the creation, maintenance, and accuracy of compliance-critical documentation, including: 

  • Compliance statements and certification support documents 
  • Product labels, markings, and required safety information for product listing, installation, and inspection
  • Ownership includes ensuring consistency across drawings, manuals, labels, manufacturing documentation, and certification files. 

Standards Interpretation and Translation: 

  • Review applicable UL, NFPA, fire code, and electrical code requirements and translate them into clear, actionable documentation for internal teams, auditors, installers, and inspectors. 

Manufacturing and Audit Readiness Support: 

  • Support development of documentation used on the manufacturing floor and during audits, including SOPs, work instructions, training materials, and documentation packages required for UL follow-up services and third-party inspections. 

Cross-Functional Collaboration: 

  • Work closely with compliance engineering, product engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to resolve documentation gaps, clarify requirements, and ensure technical accuracy across all published materials. 

Certification and Inspection Support: 

  • Assist with documentation preparation for certification submittals, field evaluations, AHJ reviews, and regulatory inquiries. 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical writing, engineering, science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. 
  • 3+ years of experience in technical writing for engineered products, manufacturing environments, or regulated industries. 
  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and extract requirements from technical standards, codes, or specifications. 
  • Strong writing skills with an emphasis on clarity, precision, and consistency. 
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills. 
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple documentation workstreams, and meet deadlines. 
  • Experience supporting audits, certifications, inspections, or regulated product documentation is strongly preferred. 
  • Familiarity with UL, NFPA, fire code, electrical code, or energy storage systems is a plus, but not required.

  • Ability to perform the essential job functions safely and successfully in accordance with the ADA, FMLA, and other applicable federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity expectations.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with applicable standards. 

Working Conditions: 

  • Work environment may include office, manufacturing, laboratory, or outdoor settings.
  • Ability to work in environments that may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while wearing appropriate PPE.
  • Essential physical requirements may include standing, walking, climbing, stooping, or extended periods of computer-based work.
  • Occasional weekend, night, or on-call work may be required.
  • Occasional travel may be required. 

In accordance with California pay transparency laws, the salary range for this position is listed below. Actual compensation may vary based on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and skills. 

California Pay Range:
$86,500$145,000 USD

The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
