Role Overview

The mission of the Senior Engineering Manager is to build and lead a high-performing team that translates company strategy into tangible business results. This role's impact is measured not just by team health and predictability, but by the successful delivery of the business outcomes they enable. The Senior Engineering Manager is a people-focused leader who acts as a key strategic partner, co-owning the tribe roadmap and creating a growth-oriented environment. Their leadership directly impacts business success by ensuring their team is focused, effective, and aligned with the most critical company priorities.

This role, as part of our group technology team, has a direct impact on the daily operations of all our businesses within the group.

What we expect from you / the position to perform

  • Co-Own tribe roadmap success by partnering with Product Management to ensure the team's delivery aligns with strategic goals and achieves desired business outcomes.

  • Drive predictable business impact by achieving team delivery predictability of over 90% against sprint goals and quarterly roadmap milestones.

  • Ensure strategic alignment by guaranteeing 100% of the team's capacity is allocated to projects aligned with company OKRs.

  • Drive AI adoption and efficiency by championing the use of AI coding assistants and modern tooling within the team, ensuring engineers meet or exceed individual AI usage targets.

  • Support, and cultivate a healthy, high-performing team by maintaining engineer utilization in a sustainable 80-90% range, contributing to a low voluntary attrition rate.

  • Guarantee structured career growth by ensuring 100% of direct reports have a documented development plan and receive quarterly performance feedback.

  • Build future capabilities by closing 100% of identified team skill gaps within two quarters through targeted training, mentorship, and hiring.

  • Drive high delivery quality by maintaining a low bug-escape rate and keeping rework from previous sprints below 10% of the team's capacity.

  • Execute the hiring plan by successfully sourcing and closing qualified candidates to meet team growth targets.

  • Ensure 100% team adoption of mandated Guild standards within one quarter of their rollout.

  • Owns: The team's delivery predictability, overall health (e.g., attrition rate), and adherence to quality standards (e.g., low bug-escape rate). Ownership at this level is focused on the socio-technical system of the team.

  • Leads: A team of Product Engineers (direct reports). Leads all people management processes for the team, including performance management, career development, compensation reviews, and hiring.

  • Partners with: Product Managers to define, prioritize, and deliver the team's roadmap; other Engineering Managers to ensure cross-team alignment; and HR to execute people processes.

  • Provides input to: The quarterly and annual strategic planning process (OKRs). Provides forecasts for team needs (hiring, training, tools).

  • Supports: Direct reports in their career growth and in overcoming technical or professional obstacles.

  • Receives updates from: The Director of Engineering on departmental strategy and from Product leadership on the product vision.

What we look for / what we require

Required

  • 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience.

  • 2+ years of experience in a formal people management or team leadership role.

  • Hands-on approach (approximately 30% of the time)

  • Strong understanding of agile methodologies and project management principles.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to motivate and guide a team.

  • Experience with hiring, mentoring, and performance management.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field or Master's degree in Engineering Management (MEM) or an MBA.

  • Experience managing distributed or remote teams.

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or similar certification.
