Job Overview

Smiths Detection is looking for a Payroll & Benefits Specialist to take ownership of UK payroll delivery and employee benefits, ensuring our people are paid accurately and on time while supporting a seamless HR experience.

About the role

You will be the subject matter expert for UK payroll and benefits, working closely with HR, Finance and external providers. This role combines hands‑on processing, problem‑solving, governance, and continuous improvement, while also supporting wider HR operations across the employee lifecycle.

Key responsibilities

Payroll Management

  • Process accurate and timely monthly payrolls using ADP iHCM.
  • Act as the escalation point for complex payroll queries (tax, NI, statutory leave, discrepancies).
  • Review and validate payroll outputs with a high level of accuracy.
  • Lead year‑end payroll activities including P11Ds and reconciliations.
  • Support Finance with variance analysis, audits and technical payroll queries.
  • Identify and drive improvements to payroll processes and controls.

Benefits Administration

  • Manage the company car scheme, including orders, renewals, approvals and compliance.
  • Administer pensions, healthcare, Cycle to Work, SAYE and other employee benefits.
  • Ensure benefits are accurately reflected in payroll and compliant with HMRC rules.
  • Support annual renewals and employee benefits enrolment.

HR Coordination

  • Support onboarding and offboarding processes, ensuring accurate payroll and benefits updates.
  • Maintain accurate employee data across HR and ERP systems and perform regular audits.
  • Assist with site inductions, HR communications and engagement activities.
  • Support HR projects, monthly changes, reporting and issue resolution.
