Job Overview

Summary: Laborers are responsible for performing general labor as part of a team performing work related to
track projects including construction, maintenance, inspections, and service. Utilizing hand and power tools. This specific position is assigned general laboring tasks to support boring operations, site preparation, material movement and general housekeeping duties.

PRIMARY / ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cleans and prepares construction site
  • Utilizes hand and power tools (railway specific tools and others)
  • Digging ditches, trenches, backfills excavations and compacts and levels earth to grade specifications, using necessary tools
  • Work with Operators to facilitate alignment, movement and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and materials
  • Loads, unloads materials, machinery, and tools as necessary
  • Driving spikes and shoveling stone (railway ballast)
  • Moving and setting cross ties and lengths of steel rail
  • Adjusting switches, lubricating switches, and tightening track bolts including carrying 50lb track jack
  • Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos & write simple correspondence
  • Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization
  • Perform basic mathematics to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Comply with all rules and regulations and instructions
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions
  • Troubleshoot issues and deal with typical problems that occur in track maintenance in the field
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee must
regularly lift and/or move heavy weights. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; reach with hands
and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and may be required to work nights, holidays, and weekends. The employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. May be exposed to live track/trains and high voltage. Exposure to harsh weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather.
