Job Overview
Performs scheduled inspections, makes repairs, and performs preventive maintenance on both inbound and outbound locomotives in accordance with FRA, company and customer specifications.
Performs scheduled inspections, makes repairs, and performs preventive maintenance on both inbound and outbound locomotives in accordance with FRA, company and customer specifications.
Principle Responsibilities:
- Performs periodic locomotive inspections in accordance with FRA requirements
- Performs periodic and annual inspections and tests on equipment
- Understands and follows FRA regulations pertaining to inspections
- Properly inspect and/or changes oil, fuel, and lubricants
- Inspects parts using rules, calipers, micrometers, and other measuring instruments.
- Wipes down and cleans unit/windows
- Properly greases couplings, fittings, traction motor gears.
- Troubleshoots and repairs locomotive and diesel engine components
- Uses effective and efficient troubleshooting methodology
- Dismantles and reassembles devices properly to remove and replace defective parts
- Properly inspects and/or replaces wheels or trucks, traction motors, springs, couplers, draft gear assembly, gear cases and cylinder assemblies; heating equipment
- Diagnoses malfunctions in diesel engines, air equipment, trucks or other components in order to determine the nature of problem and needed repair or replacement
- Assists electrician as required
- Properly handles hazardous and non-hazardous waste products
- Conducts safe mechanical and electrical operation
- Conducts and participates in proper job briefings
- Wears proper PPE on the job where required
- Reports to work on time and well rested at reporting time
- Understands/follows radio communication procedures
- Uses proper track authority with all affected rail users
- Practices good housekeeping
Requirements:
- Education: High School Diploma or GED and 2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent required, Associate's Degree preferred
- Experience: 2 years related experience or equivalent required. Diesel Locomotive experience or training is preferred.
Preferred skills:
- Knowledge and skills in use of hand tools
- Knowledge and skills in use of power tools (e.g. cut-off saws, grinders, band saws, etc.)
- Knowledge and skills in use of hydraulic wrenches and barring over tools
- Knowledge and skills in use of welding and cutting equipment
- Knowledge and skills in use of heavy operating equipment including overhead cranes, truck cranes and forklifts
- Knowledge and skills in mechanical maintenance
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, drawings, schematics, procedure manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as area, circumference, length and volume.
- Ability to use basic shop math
- Ability to read and interpret gauges and precision measuring instruments.

- Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs. Note that there is a restriction of 50 lbs. on what locomotive mechanics may lift. Heavier weight requires the use of mechanical lifting devices or other personnel, if it can be accomplished safely.
- Must be able to see well enough to read gauges, precision measuring instruments, schematics, maintenance manuals 100% of the time.
- Must be able to reach with arms and hands to perform inspection, maintenance, and repair duties 100% of the time.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, twist, kneel, squat 100% of time.
- Must be able to use hands to grasp, handle, finger and feel 100% of the time.
- Must be able to climb and balance well enough to mount locomotive by climbing up and down steps 30% of the time.

Pay:
- Base pay is $28.81 and is based on skills and qualifications.
