The Director of Payroll is responsible for overseeing all aspects of payroll shared services operations for all Stanford Medicine Children's Health (SMCH) related entities, including Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford (LPCH), Packard Children's Health Alliance (PCHA), and Packard Medical Group (PMG). The Director of Payroll is responsible for aligning payroll systems and operations with the entities' overall business strategies, closely collaborating with Human Resources, Controller's Office, Legal, Finance, DigiIS, and operational leaders to drive strategy and effectively mitigate financial, legal, compliance, and operational risks.
Under general direction, this role is responsible for developing strategies for continuously optimizing timekeeping, scheduling, and payroll systems in cloud/SaaS environments to ensure compliance and provide innovative solutions and reporting to operational leaders to help support improved financial performance of the organizations. This leader will demonstrate a wide degree of innovative, strategic problem-solving in a complex, unionized healthcare environment
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Director of Payroll is responsible for overseeing all aspects of payroll shared services operations for all Stanford Medicine Children's Health (SMCH) related entities, including Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford (LPCH), Packard Children's Health Alliance (PCHA), and Packard Medical Group (PMG). The Director of Payroll is responsible for aligning payroll systems and operations with the entities' overall business strategies, closely collaborating with Human Resources, Controller's Office, Legal, Finance, IS, and operational leaders to drive strategy and effectively mitigate financial, legal, compliance, and operational risks.
Under general direction, this role is responsible for developing strategies for continuously optimizing timekeeping, scheduling, and payroll systems in cloud/SaaS environments to ensure compliance and provide innovative solutions and reporting to operational leaders to help support improved financial performance of the organizations. This leader will demonstrate a wide degree of innovative, strategic problem-solving in a complex, unionized healthcare environment. This role reports to the Executive Director, HR Operations, Technology & Payroll.

- Leads Payroll shared services team with overall management of all aspects of the end-to-end operations and delivery of key strategic initiatives while mitigating and reducing risk.
- Leads or significantly contributes to multi-disciplinary teams addressing complex, high visibility process redesign and technology implementation or innovation projects that impact Payroll. Analyze and communicate impact of such projects and develop new procedures, as needed, to allow for successful implementation and change adaptation.
- Drives timely and accurate payroll production for the SMCH related entities and proactively monitors and ensures compliance with wage and hour laws and regulations, and federal, state, and local tax regulations.
- Ensures proactive and strategic publication and delivery of communications, notifications, and training programs related to payroll systems, policies, procedures, or regulations to leadership and employees.
- Ensures delivery of payroll analytics and reporting to help operational and organizational leaders make data driven decisions and drive efficiencies and compliance
- Assesses adequacy of internal controls, policies, and procedures and ensures timely and accurate resolution of payroll issues including root cause analysis, collaborative remediation along the end-to-end system, and ensures any identified changes are implemented in a timely manner.
- Drives a high-performance team culture with accountability and ownership through development of KPIs and performance measures that demonstrate effectiveness, enhance skills and abilities, ensure appropriate training and cross-training, and continuously reviews skillsets and abilities in support of the ever-changing needs of the business, customers, and business partners.
- Plans and allocates resources to drive payroll operational, financial, and budgetary success.
