At Waipapa Taumata Rau, we are committed to creating a supportive, inclusive, and empowering environment where all students can thrive. We are seeking a Student Support Adviser to join our Student Support and Engagement team, working across the Faculties of Business and Economics, and Law.

This is a student-facing role in which you will provide holistic support, pastoral care, and guidance to students from diverse backgrounds—helping them navigate challenges, access services, and succeed in their academic journey.

As a trusted and visible presence, you will work directly with students to understand their needs and connect them with the right support services. You will also collaborate closely with Support and Experience Advisers and with wider university teams to deliver a coordinated, seamless student experience.

Ngā Haepapa Matua | Key Responsibilities (not limited too):

  • Provide pastoral care and wellbeing support, responding to a wide range of student needs
  • Build strong, trusted relationships with students through proactive engagement
  • Support students to access services that enhance their well-being, academic success, and sense of belonging
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams to develop and implement individual support plans
  • Engage with student communities, including clubs, mentoring programmes, and support networks
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to coordinated care across services

He kōrero mōu | About you

We are looking for someone who is passionate about student wellbeing and brings a strong commitment to equity and inclusion.

You will ideally have:

  • Experience in a student-facing or advisory role, ideally within education, community, or wellbeing setting
  • A background in Māori and/or Pacific support, and/or equity-focused support
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and communicate effectively
  • Confidence supporting individuals experiencing distress or complex circumstances
  • The ability to navigate systems, processes, and services to achieve positive outcomes for students
  • An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the ability to apply this in practice
  • The ability to work with a cultural lens, recognising the importance of identity, whānau, and community in student success
  • A genuine commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, including supporting students from a wide range of backgrounds and lived experiences
  • You will contribute to a culturally safe environment grounded in values such as manaakitanga (care), whanaungatanga (connection), and kaitiakitanga (stewardship).
  • A relevant tertiary qualification (or equivalent experience) will be advantageous.
