About the Role
The Accounting Manager, Fiscally Sponsored Projects, is responsible for the day-to-day supervision and operations. Operating in a matrixed environment, the Accounting Manager, will partner with functional leaders in Tides Center and People to foster a collaborative approach to service delivery. The Accounting Manager is accountable for Senior Accountant and Accountant performance management and staffing, in alignment with existing policies and procedures, including the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The Accounting Manager will coach Senior Accountants in their role as service delivery team members to deploy and complete activities, as guided by compliance requirements and the assigned service team Senior Advisor. The Accounting Manager will utilize established escalation protocols to resolve issues, informing and collaborating with the Managing Advisor to ensure service delivery standards are achieved.
Success depends on building and sustaining cross-functional relationships. The Accounting Manager is responsible for uplifting and embodying Tides JEDI beliefs and core values of future focus, accountability, transparency, respect, and collaboration in all areas of work, engagement with team members, and Tides partners.
The Accounting Manager may be responsible for onboarding new partners and transitioning partners to service delivery teams. The Managing Advisor will engage with partners to deliver enhanced scopes of work, including more complex or strategic initiatives from design to execution.
What you will Do
Staff Management and Team Leadership (50%)
Develop and lead direct reports and engage in performance enablement processes of direct reports, and as a collaborator with functional team leaders, fostering an environment of mutual accountability and shared goals.
Develop annual team goals, objectives, and key performance indicators, in alignment with the organizational strategic plan and Tides Center operating plan.
Collaborate with the Service Team leaders and Accounting Operations staff to ensure consistent and high-quality customer service, and that the fiscally sponsored projects Accountants/Sr. Accountants are actively contributing to organization goals.
Ensure that daily financial and accounting functions are in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and all applicable regulatory requirements including those set forth by the Federal Accounting Standards Board, and legal rules and regulations for non-profit operations designated as IRS 501(C)(3) organizations.
Manage audit processes by ensuring documentation for the federal and state tax return preparation and supports annual financial audits and single audits (OMB A-133) are provided, as needed including agency monitoring visits and ensuring “audit readiness” of assigned grants. Prepare the annual schedule of expenditures for federal awards.
Review and monitor grant agreements for accurate revenue recognition; prepare annual entries to release net assets from restrictions and prepare an annual reconciliation of Net Asset Balances.
Collaborate with the Vice President, Finance or their delegate to calculate and submit negotiated indirect cost rate agreement proposals.
Implement, improve, and document accounting procedures to ensure efficiency and accuracy, including administering training on the NetSuite financial system for internal staff and client stakeholders.
Maintain financial report integrity in the NetSuite Financial system and keep transaction templates and forms up to date with evolving processes and fiscal year roll-overs.
Hold direct reports accountable for providing excellent customer service and maintaining accurate financial information; collaborate with Tides Center leaders to assign caseload accountants based on established criteria and ensure smooth transitions and partner support.
Engage in and resolve partner escalations in alignment with the established protocol, and in partnership with Managing Advisors and/or Senior Leaders.
Review and approve journal entries prepared by fiscally sponsored projects accountants/Sr. Accountants
Holds Senior Accountants accountable for project monthly close task responsibilities
Review monthly, quarterly and annual project balance sheet and project review reconciliations
Coach and develop Sr. Accountants assigned to service delivery teams to ensure consistent delivery of services and fostering a compliance and results-oriented culture.
Review and approve complex financial statements and related reports, including balance sheets, income statements, cash-flow reports, budgets, and variance analysis to projects, prepared by Sr. Accountants.
Management of Fiscally Sponsored Projects Caseload (50%)
Approve all cash disbursements for project caseload and monitor project cash flow to ensure compliance with funder regulations and Tides cash management policies.
Summarize and forecast project revenues, expenses, and cash flows based on past, present and expected results.
Review prepared financial transactions to record revenue and administrative fees, and to reclassify expenses between funding sources.
Annual Audit requirements of management, financial statements & notes, SEFA reporting, Functional Expense compilations, lease reporting, accruals and compilation of other audit schedules.
Annual Tax reporting and support gathering for 990 filings
Engage in and lead projects, as needed and at the direction of Senior Leaders
Review all annual funder reporting requests before distribution.
Organize, coordinate and supervise all annual project audits.
What you will Bring
Experiential knowledge of FAR, CFR and relevant OMB circulars as well as GAAP/FASB standards.

Proficient in enterprise-wide accounting systems such as NetSuite (or similar ERP software), Proficiency with MS Office suite of products.
Proven track record of maintaining effective internal controls and developing efficient financial policies and procedures.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills as well as the ability to see the big picture while understanding the details involved and the ramifications of the decisions made.
Proven ability to organize and support workflow processes that ensure high degrees of accuracy and accountability within team members
Ideal Experience
6 years of progressive or direct experience and relevant bachelor’s degree or 8 years of relevant experience. Non-profit accounting and government grant management experience strongly preferred.
