Our client, an emerging leader in the agricultural sector, is seeking a highly experienced and results-driven farm manager to oversee the mixed farming unit. The successful candidate will be responsible for the comprehensive management of a large-scale integrated farm operation, encompassing piggery, dairy and forage production, while ensuring high performance against strict Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and operational excellence. This pivotal role requires a strategic leader with deep technical expertise in livestock and crop management.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Oversee the daily operations across the livestock and crop production sectors.
- Implement and manage sustainable farming practices and maintain high animal welfare standards.
- Oversee farrow-to-finish piggery (breeding, farrowing, weaning, and finishing).
- Manage a 400+ dairy herd (milking, calf rearing & heifer rearing).
- Coordinate feed formulation and supply for livestock.
- Monitor livestock health and productivity, developing and executing breeding and nutrition plans.
- Herd fertility & herd health management to ensure biosecurity, milk quality, and animal welfare standards are attained.
- Develop and enforce safety and biosecurity measures on the farm.Supervise forage crop production from planning to harvesting, optimizing yield and quality for silage and hay.
- Keep detailed records of farm operations, production costs, and support in overall profitability analysis.
- Stay updated with agricultural regulations and trends to ensure compliance and adopt innovative practices.
- Manage stock and feed inventory among other farming supplies
- Supervise and train farm staff, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and regulations.
- Ensure the team works to attain the provided KPI's
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Animal Science, or a related field.
- Must possess a certificate in artificial insemination.
- Minimum of 8 years experience in farm management, preferably in piggery, poultry, or crop production.
- Membership with Agricultural Institute of Zambia (AIZ) is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of agricultural practices and sustainable farming techniques.
- Proficient in financial management and record-keeping.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to solve problems effectively and adapt to challenging situations.
- Willingness to work flexible hours and be on-call for emergencies.
- Valid driver’s license is essential.
- Ability and willingness to reside on-site at the farm.
- Experience with agricultural technology and software is a plus.
- High level of computer literacy with excellent Microsoft Office skills.
- Demonstrated leadership in team management, strong problem-solving and initiative, and clear communication with the Operations Manager / COO roles, among other stakeholders.
