Job Overview

Our Client, an emerging farming enterprise is looking to recruit a Farm Manager to oversee day-to-day operations and management of agricultural farming activities on two farm steads. The ideal candidate must have a strong background in farm management practices, including crop production, livestock management, and sustainable farming methods. The Farm Manager will be responsible for optimizing productivity, implementing agricultural best practices, and ensuring the health and growth of crops and livestock.

1. Piggery

Oversee the daily operations, health, and productivity of a pig production project with the following core responsibilities:

Animal Health and Welfare

  • Monitor pig health and behavior to detect signs of disease or distress.
  • Implement vaccination and veterinary care programs.
  • Ensure proper feeding, watering, and hygiene.
  • Maintain high standards of animal welfare in line with legal and ethical standards

Breeding and Reproduction

  • Manage breeding programs (natural mating or artificial insemination).
  • Keep records of breeding cycles, farrowing dates, and piglet performance.
  • Oversee care of sows, piglets, weaners, growers, and finishers

Feeding and Nutrition

  • Plan and supervise feeding schedules and rations.
  • Ensure feed quality and storage.
  • Minimize feed waste and manage feed costs efficiently

Staff Supervision and Training

  • Hire, train, and supervise farm staff.
  • Assign tasks and ensure staff follow safety and welfare protocols.
  • Promote teamwork and resolve any labor issues

Facility and Equipment Management

  • Design and supervise construction of piggery houses
  • Maintain pens, water systems, and feeding equipment.
  • Oversee sanitation and biosecurity measures to prevent disease outbreaks.
  • Coordinate maintenance and upgrades of buildings and equipment

Financial and Record Keeping

  • -Keep accurate records of production, health, breeding, feed use, and sales.
  • -Monitor budgets, expenses, and profitability.
  • -Assist with financial planning and reporting

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure the farm complies with local, national, and international agricultural regulations.
  • Keep up to date with environmental, health, and safety standards

Marketing and Sales

  • Coordinate the sale of pigs (live or processed).
  • Build relationships with buyers, suppliers, and stakeholders.
  • Analyze market trends to make informed decisions.

2. Poultry

Oversee operations of a poultry project to ensure optimal bird health, supervise staff, manage feed supply, monitor egg production and maintain equipment while ensuring compliance with animal welfare standards.

  • Manage and oversee the daily operations of the poultry farm
  • Ensure that all aspects of the farm are running efficiently and effectively
  • Hire, train, and supervise farm employees
  • Monitor and maintain the health and well-being of the poultry
  • Develop and implement protocols for biosecurity, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability
  • Manage the budget and financial performance of the farm
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations
  • Collaborate with vendors, suppliers, and other stakeholders to maintain the farm's operations and profitability

3.Crop Production

Oversee and manage field operation of crop production by ensuring proper input selection, cultivation, pre-and post-harvest management of cereal, legumes, and tuber crops, including the value chain management and market linkage.

  • Oversee crop production. 
  • Develop and implement cropping plans and schedules for seasonal demands and climate variations. 
  • Pest and disease management
  • Conduct refresher training and capacity-building programs for staff and contract farmers. 
  • Carry out field trials for new inputs. 
  • Provide regular updates, reports, and management recommendations. 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture or a related field. 
  • At least 4+ years of work experience in managing a dynamic piggery, poultry and crop farm, particularly in protected farming
  • Member of Agricultural Institute of Zambia (AIZ) is an added advantage.
  • Physical fitness to perform manual tasks around the farm steads such as lifting heavy objects, cleaning facilities, and handling live animals.
  • Competency with Microsoft Excel and Power Point presentation.
  • Experience with basic accounting/book keeping, record-keeping, budgeting as it relates to Farm management
  • Knowledge of poultry, piggery and crop farming practices and procedures, including breeding, rearing, and disease management
  • Ability to identify and solve problems related to poultry, piggery and crop farming, such as disease outbreaks, feed shortages, and equipment malfunctions.
  • Familiarity with technology and software used in animal farming, such as automated feeders, climate control systems, and data management softwares.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to industry regulations and standards related to animal welfare, food safety, and environmental impact
  • Strong, emotionally intelligent communication skills to effectively engage with shareholders, staff, suppliers, and customers
  • Excellent communication and reporting skills
  • Must be adaptable and capable of handling rigorous farm pressures and demands. 
  • Innovative, result-oriented and self-driven able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Proven Ability to supervise farm workers.
  • Willing to stay at the farm location
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and be on call for emergencies, including weekends and holidays
  • Valid SADC drivers license
