POSITION SUMMARY

The Umoja Translational Medicine team at Umoja Biopharma is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Associate Scientist to support laboratory-based technical operations. This role will focus on executing bioanalytical assays and supporting clinical sample testing to advance investigational products. This role will also oversee management and organization of clinical samples and critical reagents, ensuring seamless workflow and operational excellence within the lab environment.

The ideal candidate will have foundational industry experience and a strong technical background in immunology and molecular biology. This is a hands-on lab role with opportunities to contribute to assay development and translational research.

CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES

Specific responsibilities include:  

  • Execute and support fit-for-use bioanalytical methods for clinical biospecimen testing, including flow cytometry, molecular assays, and serum/ plasma-based protein analysis.
  • Assist in assay optimization and qualification under guidance from senior scientists.
  • Oversee the management and organization of clinical samples, ensuring proper handling and storage.
  • Prepare, maintain, and organize critical laboratory reagents, ensuring proper labeling, handling, storage, and disposal as needed.
  • Create and maintain accurate and complete laboratory records using an electronic notebook system that adheres to company guidelines and in accordance with SOPs and regulatory guidance.
  • Support data analysis and contribute to technical reports and presentations for communication of study results in cross-functional meetings.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to ensure smooth assay transfer and execution.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s in Immunology, Molecular Biology, or related discipline with 4+ years of experience; an Associate Degree in Molecular Biology or similar with 6+ years of experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered. 
  • Hands-on experience with cell culture, handling primary cells, and/or functional cell-based assays
  • Hands-on experience with multicolor flow cytometry and ELISA or ECL-based protein assays
  • Familiarity with qPCR/ddPCR platform technologies
  • Proven experience and proficiency in utilizing computer-based systems, such as electronic lab notebooks, Microsoft Office, and graphing/statistical programs

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Experience with single cell analytics, including high parameter flow cytometry, sequencing, spatial transcriptomics
  • Exposure to clinical sample handling and documentation
  • Industry experience and/or experience in the cell and gene therapy field
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Requirements:  

  • Project-oriented work in this role will require regular on-site presence (5 days/week) to complete essential job-related functions for assisting with bioanalytical method development, execution, and in-person meetings.
  • Early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekend work may also be required to support ex-US activities.

Salary Range: $90,610 - $111,930
