Job Overview

About the role

The Material Engineer will be responsible for assisting in the design of products, and customer recommendations for all product lines which include sealing, brake applications and NVH / NSV.

This position is located in the Dearborn Michigan office and is not telework eligible.

 

What you'll do

  • Characterizes materials, screens, optimizes, and collects reproducible data.
  • Conducts chemical research and development related to coated products.
  • Assists in the development of potentially improved coating formulations.
  • Assists with planning and coordination of plant scale-up studies for improved formulations.
  • Provides technical support/troubleshooting to technology applicable issues in manufacturing or related to product performance as needed.
  • Assists and provides input into test methodology.
  • Manages solvent/chemicals purchase specifications and SDS.
  • Maintains working knowledge of safety policies and regulations to ensure duties of self and others are performed in a safe manner.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or chemical engineering.
  • 1+ years Chemistry Laboratory experience of rubber processing, formulating, and compounding experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. 
  • Knowledgeable of test methodologies for elastomer compounds through accredited bodies such as ASTM, ISO.
  • Knowledgeable of environmental and chemical regulation such as Reach, RoHS, IMDS.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Problem solving and analysis skills that include the collection, evaluation and reporting of data and information related to system problems and observations.
  • Strong communication skills that include attentive listening, ability to respond to opinions constructively and effectively present ideas to an audience.

 Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods (4–8 hours depending on workflow).
  • Ability to walk between workstations, storage areas, and equipment rooms.
  • Capacity to bend, reach, and crouch to access low or high shelves.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 25lbs.
