Play a key role in delivering high-impact environmental research through specialised research infrastructure and technical support.

The Opportunity
This Senior Technical Support Officer role is part of Western’s Sustainability and Environmental Science team, supporting field based climate change research facilities that underpin major ecological, agricultural, and environmental science projects. You will contribute to long term research programs that analyse how ecosystems respond to climate variability, supporting impactful work across the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment.

You will oversee the daily operation, calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of environmental sensors, mechanical systems, data loggers, and infrastructure across facilities including the Cumberland Plains Supersite eddy covariance tower, Pastures and Climate Extremes (PACE), Rainout Shelters, and Whole Tree Chambers. Your work ensures high quality data capture, system reliability, and safe operations across these field environments.

You will also support research teams with system setup, instrumentation, data acquisition, quality assurance, and workflow development. As part of the broader Technical Services team, you will help maintain facility readiness, uphold safety standards, and provide guidance to staff and students working across field-based platforms.

What Success Looks Like:

  • Operate, install, calibrate and maintain environmental sensors, analytical equipment and instrumentation.
  • Configure and integrate environmental sensor systems with data logging and backup platforms to ensure reliable data capture.
  • Collect, process and quality check datasets from field facilities and prepare verified data for researchers.
  • Monitor and maintain field systems and infrastructure through regular inspections and operational logs.
  • Assist research teams with experimental design, data collection, analytical support and monitoring of climate change research facilities.

About You

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant environmental, engineering, ecological or agricultural discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with instrumentation associated with environmental and climate research, including sensors, data loggers and gas analysers.
  • Ability to analyse environmental datasets using R and or Python, with familiarity in managing and visualising large datasets.
  • Strong planning, problem solving and time management skills, with the ability to work safely at heights and in physically demanding field environments.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document procedures and coordinate activities with multiple stakeholders.
