Are you a highly experienced Engineering Team Lead ready to drive modernisation across enterprise-scale database platforms?
Join Xero’s CaSH team to lead our shift toward Postgres and DynamoDB and accelerate our migration to managed services. This role offers a diverse mix of tactical and strategic work, ensuring data reliability while helping Xero increase its speed to value.
What You'll Deliver:
- Exceptional People Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of experienced, senior engineers. You'll translate DRE insights into actionable strategies for product teams, fostering a high-performing culture.
- Delivery & Reliability Expert: Deep experience in delivery, planning, and process optimization. You'll ensure performant, stable data stores and manage a vital support roster, setting clear SLAs and managing incident communications.
- Technical Acumen: Strong familiarity with SQL Server, Postgres, and DynamoDB, the engineering lifecycle, CI/CD, and using AI tools for productivity. (Understanding of application development and DevOps automation is a plus!)

What you'll bring:
- You’ll be a seasoned Team Lead, bringing substantial experience in guiding software delivery and engineering teams through Lean and/or Agile methodologies.
- You'll have a technical/database background
- Delivery: strong experience, ability to help teams plan and break down work, set ambitious goals, and optimise processes
- Data reliability: experience working with databases, understanding the interface between applications and databases, building performant, stable data stores
- Technologies: preference for familiarity with two of SQL Server, Postgres, DynamoDB
- Engineering lifecycle: familiarity with the development lifecycle, CI/CD concepts
- Operations: The team does a lot of support for product teams, so we're looking for an analytical mindset to drive solutions, ability to manage a support team, set SLAs expectations with customers / stakeholders, comfortable in incidents facilitating mitigation actions and comms
- AI: experience utilising AI tools to accelerate development and productivity tasks
- Your deep understanding of modern software delivery practices and the entire software development lifecycle is evident in your track record of successful team leadership.
What you'll do:
- Engage, understand, collaborate, and communicate effectively with peers and teams across Xero to drive continuous improvement towards Xero’s sustainably excellent engineering vision.
- Lead your team of engineers to successfully identify, scope, manage, and complete high quality work which delivers measurable improvements to production systems in a timely manner.
- Build cross-team relationships for win-win outcomes
- Foster team growth through feedback, coaching, and opportunities for advancement
- Analyse system health and make regular system health reviews
- Support engineers during incidents and facilitate post incident reviews
- Maintain current knowledge of technologies used in the development of Xero’s software applications.
- Build cross-team relationships and manage stakeholder expectations
